Ehh she was ok. Personally, I HATE philosophy, so I knew I was going to struggle. She seems like a nice person. She wants to help the students and cares about your grade. She was available for office hours and always willing to help. Fair grader I guess.

DR. ORTEGA IS WHO I WANT TO BE WHEN I GROW UP. Seriously, made PL 101 actually enjoyable. She really knows her stuff. The papers are hard and she grades them tough, so don't take for an easy A. The last couple weeks of class are all about social issues like racism and sexism, which encouraged a lot of really great discussion. Would take again.

Definitely a tough grader, but worth it. She knows what she's talking about and is very into the material. Can be rather opinionated and borderline offensive on occasion, but she means well and is overall an incredibly nice professor.

Although she doesn't really like the traditional grading methods, she's definitely a tough grader. But it's worth taking a class with her. She is definitely passionate about what she teaches, explains things clearly and makes philosophy interesting and relatable. Always willing to meet with a student to help with material.

very smart and has read just about every book and seen just about every movie. she was an interesting & fun person, but her class was the complete opposite. she gives 2 exams and 2 papers and grades really hard. i only know of one person who got an a in the class. take this class if u want a fun class but don't care about getting an a or even b

Amazing. One of the smartest professors at JCU. Very passionate about the material. Excellent at engaging the students in the class. She knows who comes to class prepared and who doesn't - it isn't even worth trying to fake. The exams and papers are reasonable. Workload is manageable. Ortega is just a genuinely good person to get to know.

wildly intelligent, has cool interests, very little written homework, sometimes heavy reading. only a tough grader in the sense that the difference between an A and a B in her class is huge. i doubt she gives many low grades, but she also gives only the best work As. refreshing liveliness and a strong liberal voice on a jesuit campus.

What can I say? Mariana will get in your face and make you feel awful about your pathetic little life. At first. She's not so abrasive as the course progresses. She grows on you, at least, and is encouraging to discussion and backing your opinion, especially because she has many of her own.

She is really nice, and on the last day told our class how much she enjoyed teaching it. She's a tough grader but if you can back up your own arguments you'll do fine. Shes also jumps around and gets really excited about what she is teaching. She's just such a sweetheart.

ummmm... if you like hearing the liberal political viewpoints and hearing about how Bush and his administration sucks, take Ortega. If you are a conservative, you may feel uncomfortable at times in class. She is also a really tough grader.

Although she is probably one of the most interesting and knowledgable teachers at JCU, she grades really hard. In order to get a good grade on papers and tests you need to make up your own arguments and the material you learn you arent really tested on it. But she is very interesting to listen to.
