Comment:
This class was not at all as exciting and fun as I had hoped. He is very hard to follow in his lectures, he loves his big words and sentences that go no where. Dance videos we watched were often extremely strange and didn't give good impressions of certain styles. Readings were often as difficult to understand and follow as him.

I am a dancer, and love choreography, but frankly Franko has killed it for me. He often rambles through lectures and rarely has a clear point to his lectures. It doesn't even seem like he actually reads through our papers, and his grading is very superficial.

Comment:
This teacher transforms the course to fit his agenda rather than shaping his curriculum around the course. Being a dancer, he focused Issues in Theatre entirely on dance theory. While he has plenty of substantive things to say, he taught a required freshman level course as if it were a postgrad theory course, leaving MOST students quite bewildered.

Comment:
I rarely complain about instructors, but Franko makes it easy. Little variation in topics (most revolved around choreography; little variety) and unclear of his expectations. Created a hostile learning environment and openly mocked students. Disappointed that I learned nothing and that my class experienced his "crabby" side. Avoid him if possible.

UGH. He is INCREDIBLY full of himself. He thinks that what he has to say is the most important thing...and he only talks about choreography...oh I'm sorry...choreography that he has been in, and about France. The best grade on an essay will be the one that agrees with everything he says. And he's willing to give help, but is SO unapproachable.

So if you take 60B with Mark just know that the answer is French people or Baroque dance. Ok, he wasn’t THAT bad. No really, he’s a nice guy and is available to answer any questions without making you feel insecure.

Mark Franko is a defunct, ex-diva ballerina; not that I'm bias or anything. His theory class is super boring (I think he's lost touch with the real world) as he enjoys showing re-runs of swan lake. Good luck trying to understand what he has to say, unless you're a theory nut. zzzzz

Taking this class with Mark was a good experience. My first class in ballet, it was a real builder of proprioception. Mark is very passionate about the art of dance, and it shows. An excellent experience; I recommend it to all.
