Absolute nonsense. Lectures are unbearable. Every single class was him rambling for 2 hours. He doesn't come prepared AT ALL. The readings were extremely obscure books written by his friends. I have no clue what the class was about. the only graded assignment was the final proj. I learnt absolutely nothing about non-violence. horrendous professor.

Great to fulfill your requirement. It's as easy as philosophy can be and little to no work at all. Didn't have the book and didn't go to half the lectures and did fine. Participate in discussion and get a good TA.

Professor Lance isn't so bad. Fair warning I never actually talked to him but he seems like a pretty nice guy. Lots of the material was confusing but he's a good lecturer and made it all a lot easier to understand. Tests were all really easy. Great for just fulfilling the philosophy requirement.

Subject material was very difficult and the readings/lectures had nothing to do with the midterms, essay, or final. Expect tough grading and I still have no idea how this class is an intro-level course.

Lance is a pretty good teacher. Most people don't get him b'c he just likes to get a rise out of people. Sooner you get this, sooner the class makes sense. Grading depends on TA (try to get Caleb). Essays weren't too bad, and the final exam was a complete joke (the person below was not kidding). Come with open mind, you'll do fine.

This was a good class to take to fulfill Philosophy requirement. I didn't do any of the readings until the week before the midterm and final and I ended up fine. Participate a lot in your discussion section b/c that counts for a large portion of the grade. The final exam was SO easy; 4 multiple choice questions (everyone finished in like 10 mins)

With a class as large as this, it's very important to participate in your section. The subject material itself doesn't really matter, Lance just wants you to start thinking about important things like life and education.

I learned absolutely nothing from Lance. Grading is random and entirely depends on which TA you get.

Lance is fantastic for filling a requirement. The lectures are only semi-related to the readings; the papers are only semi-related to the lectures; and the tests are only semi-related the study guide. Overall, he taught me that philosophy is useless and philosophers are an anachronism. Overall: minimal work, minimal learning, maximal cynicism.

Yes, his fashion sense is questionable, but he's a sincere and compassionate individual which translates well into being an awesome professor. Open up, laugh, and let this guy teach you something you didn't already know. He is hilarious and if you don't think so, pull whatever it is out before it does more damage.

fascinating professor. one of the most stimulating I've had at GU. come with any degree of interest, and you'll love it. steer clear if you don't enjoy philosophy, you'll hate it like all of these freshmen. recommended for upper level classes.

DO NOT TAKE HIM! The worst class at Georgetown. AVOID! He graded the first tests 20% A, B, C, D, F. TA was horrible. Steer clear!

The class could be boring but usually he made it pretty easy to comprehend more difficult concepts. The work load for the class is virtually non-existent, I would be suprised if I spent more than 7 hours the whole semester doing work for this class, including reading, studying and papers.

BORING. I fell asleep every lecture without fail. The readings weren't bad and I don't think the class would have been if it wasn't a 300 person lecture. But it was, so it sucked. AVOID lecture class if you can, but I'd probably take him at a higher level-- smart guy.

Firstly, Lance thinks marijuana should be legal. Secondly, Lance has "impeccable fashion sense." Thirdly, the guy rocks and we never went into enough detail to be given a hard test, so the midterm and final were easy. The paper is a bit tricky; just get a TA that doesn't grade 13 times harder than the other ones.

He doesnt try to get you to like him, but hes a good lecturer and the class is easy. You might not think hes all that great until you see the TAs' pitiful attempts at explaining things. They suck. He makes fairly difficult concepts clearcut. Also hes an anarchist.

Comment:
Lance's lectures are terribly boring, and unfortunately, the mandatory discussion sections led by TAs aren't much better. The material is hard, and Lance doesn't forget for a second to remind you of that. His explainations don't clarify much. You're better off googling the topics to see what the results have to say. Avoid if possible.

Philosophy is an unclear subject anyway... but mark lance doesnt help the fact... hes fine.. but just kindof a weirdo. lectures arent very engaging, but every so often he will jolt everyone from their slumbers by cursing or making drug references...
