He knows his stuff, but can be very preachy. He wants what he says regurgitated back to him in essays. That being said- GREAT teacher! He comes off as a hard a--, but he's a softy if he thinks you are engaging the material. Keep current with the reading, and highlight namesterms to find and cite in your essays!

Comment:

Best instructor on campus! I had him for sociology 101 and 343. I wish he taught more classes. He lectures and shows a lot of documentaries. Go to class every time and you'll pass. He doesn't allow side conversations and cell phone use and will call you out on it but you shouldn't be talking or on your phone anyways.

If you don't want to take tests, take this class. He gives 3 take home essays each worth 30% of your grade, and 10% for attendance. Usually shows videos which help tremendously in writing the papers. He is very opinionated, but very passionate about the topic. If you've paid attention at all in class, you'll pass. Would recommend.

It's obvious that he knows his stuff. It's obvious he's passionate about the course material. This does not always translate well to the students who are used to having absolutely everything spelled out for them and want to be treated like children. Go to class, read the material, you'll be fine. If you can't pass this course, drop out of college.

Professor Mantyh makes class well worth attending. You learn so much form the videos he shows in class. The only graded assignments are three take home essays. Great class, I highly recommend it.

Best professor I have ever had. I learned so much from his class. He has a lot of real life experience with what he is teaching and clearly communicates complex concepts to his class. Take his class!!

Awesome teacher! I've taken all of Dr. Mantyh's classes (Criminology, Social Change, Internship) and he is awesome. He has very strong opinions but he is full of knowledge. If you go to lectures and pay attention and take notes, you'll get an A. I learned more from him than any other professor at UWM.

Such a good professor! His lectures are easy to follow. His exams make it really obvious what the correct answer is; he says he doesn't try to trick you with tests, but instead wants to reinforce his lectures with his tests.

Comment:

Easy class as long as you go to lecture and reiterate what he wants to hear on exams. Don?t violate classroom educate because he can be a loose cannon. For example, a student was reading a news paper during lecture, and Dr. Mantyh pointed him out and used some strong vulgarities towards the student. Later he apologized, but it was really weird.

He is good. He uses too many books however to get his point across when they seem to say the same thing. For example, he was lecturing on a different book (while I was reading something I was supposed to be reading 2 weeks ago for the same class), and both of those books made exactly the same points.
