Comment:
Extremely boring, although he gives good feedback on essays he grades essay so harsh. He made the final a essay online and we had to analyze one sonnet and make it five pages, it was almost impossible to finish.

Prof Elsky is extremely intelligent and passionate about his subject. He makes 16th century literature come to life and relates the texts to students everyday life. He welcomes class discussions and is willing to forgo his planned lecture for interesting discussions. Lots of poetry analysis. you will enjoy him.

Comment:
Took this class over the summer. It was extremely boring due to the fact that each week is constructed the same exact way. One student reads a critical article on Shakespeare and presents his or her paper to the class. There are three presentations per session. If you're looking to read Shakespeare's plays, don't take this class.

I took a number of graduate-level classes with Professor Elsky and would describe him with only one word: "Scholar." If you feel bored in his classes, then you are in the wrong program or major. One has to love the subject to appreciate the depth of knowledge Professor possesses. Literary criticism is not entertainment, but an intellectual effort.

Comment:
I took a Renaissance seminar with Elsky. It was the driest class I have ever taken. You read extremely boring books analyzing the use of space in the Renaissance. Most of them are books that you can't take out of the library. He lectures non stop and there is barely any class discussion. Two EXTREMELY hard papers and presentation. Very nice though.

I don't doubt that Prof. Elsky is a nice person. His Early Modern Literature course was brutal though. The focus on home design was too esoteric. There was hardly any discussion during class. Around 95% of class time was listening to lecture. Save your money and just ask for a syllabus.

One of the nicest Professors on campus. A kind, caring, intelligent human being. Takes the time to listen and respects the opinions of students. It was a pleasure to find such a "human" professor. Hats off to this man.

Great professor. He assigns two papers and a final. Provides historical background on books/poems that are to be read, and goes over chunks of lines in certain chapters to make sure everything is clear. Be prepared to answer questions in class.
