Papers and participation! He has very high expectations. The course does not count for a writing req because there is no revision process; you simply write it, hand it in, and get a grade. He will meet with you to help you with your analysis and writing skills. Friendly and helpful, but he will not waste his time on students that hand in BS.

The class is very dependent on participation, and what you bring to the table. He helps you develop your writing skills and assigns a 7page paper a week. It's a lot but he's fair with grading. Class does not count as a writing credit. Do not make this mistake especially if u haven't gotten exempt from one. He is nice, just don't get on his bad side

Amster is amazing. I have him for my first year seminar and he has been great and really helpful, and I get the sense that my writing will really improve as he makes us write alot. There is a lot of work, but its college so you shouldn't be complaining. Great guy too, you can tell he really cares and is in to what he is teaching.

Good guy with good intentions. Tries a little hard to be cool, talks about his band, his time in Asia, and his son more then anything. A little cocky. Once you learn the style of writing in his class, his essays will get easier. He makes you write more then ten essays.

Sort of weird, but very nice, as long as you don't try to mess with him. Do the readings or he will kick you out of class. We had 11 essays to write, but after a while you start to figure out what he wants and he will allow you to do rewrites. Shows some laughably bad movies, but also some really good ones you've never heard of.

This class was my Freshman Seminar. I really liked the class but there were 14 essays and a final essay. Amster is a hoot. He talks a lot and classes can be boring. Mine was in the morning and sometimes hard to stay awake through.

My class was a film class and freshman year seminar. It was really interesting and everyone learned a lot. There were a lot of papers, but by the end of the class your writing improves so much that it's worth it. If you do the reading and papers on time, you should get a good grade! He is also an awesome guy!

Prof. Amster's ethnographiv film class is by far the best class I have taken thus far. I cannot stress my appreciation for this class enough, it is not only amazing but eye-opening as well. I have a greater understanding of what goes into producing a film and implications which arise when representing another person or culture on camera.

Okay introductory class. Had a good time with Amster, he is a great guy. I even had lunch with him once in the teacher's cafeteria or whatever while he was trying to convince me to be an anthropology major.

Very disappointed to find that after I took his course and decided to become a soc major instead he has changed his opinion of me to a mediocre student and passed poor comments about me onto professors in completely different departments. The man needs to not take things so personally.
