Comment:

Very knowledgable. Went through essays with the professor but failed them each time. Have to give yourself a few days to do the quizzes with them being very long and difficult. Would suggest meeting with her very often to go over your essays over and over till she's very happy with it. Would suggest to show up to every class.

Comment:

Maureen has a specific set of hoops that she expects her students to jump through, do that carefully and you'll be fine. Follow the syllabus schedule carefully, read her handouts, speak up in class and don't take things personally. Maureen cares a lot and wants all of her students to do well, she is more than willing to meet outside of class time.

Maureen occasionally just won't show up to class, because she over slept or wasn't feeling well. She is also often late. She took over a month to mark our first essays , giving us only less than a week to write and second and third final essay. She failed over half the class on the first essay. Her weekly quizzes are almost impossible & take 2hrs

Maureen is a very hard marker! This course is a lot of work and participation counts! I suggest not skipping a single class and keeping up with the large amount of readings. If you want to do well, make sure you talk about feminism.. she will talk forever about that topic! Expect over three quarters of the class to drop this course by the end.

Most awful degrading teacher. Fails students at all opportunities. extremely unclear grading criteria. often does not show up to her own lectures. picks on students for incorrect answers. if you don't participate in class discussions she will call you out on it. clicks her teeth constantly.

If you want to skate by with an easy class, don't take this one. There are mixed feelings about whether people like Maureen as a professor, she will challenge you and will not let you get away with half ass effort. She expects you to expect the best from yourself and won't let you slide. If you work hard, you will leave her class a better student.

At the beginning I hated this class more than anything in the world. Her teaching style can be very bold as she likes you to participate lots in class + takes her a very long time to return grades on essays which is frustrating. Although these are the negatives I found Maureen growing on me toward the end - if you put in the work, you can do good

She interrupts students and is very harsh when she doesn't hear the answer she wants right away. Her quizzes are filled with answers that are extremely similar, or mean almost the same thing which makes it hard to get a good grade on them. She is very picky when it comes to papers and gives a rubric which seems completely arbitrary.

Hawkins will be late for almost all the classes. Will bully students by calling them out infant of the class. Half of the class got a F- on midterm. Started the class with 25ish students probably 12 by the end of the semester. Avoid her class unless you like regurgitating her thoughts and being swimming in homework and readings.

Maureen speaks VERY quietly so sit in the front row. Meet with her at the very beginning of the semester even if it's just to say hi. If you do so, she'll bend over backwards for you. Shes not always clear on what she wants you to do so ASK QUESTIONS. Participation is very important if you don't want a major assignment. Didn't really like the class

At first I hated this class with every fibre of my being. But honestly, once you begin to speak up more and understand her teaching method, she's one of the best professors you can have. She is more than willing to help with anything she can, and gives extensive and useful feedback. Always answers emails quickly. Does everything she can.

As a drama major I initially couldn't stand Maureen or her class. However, any student willing to put work in and write to her liking will pass with flying colours. She can be frustrating and hard to listen to, but if you meet with her, listen to what she's telling you, do what she asks, and get every extra credit you can- you will be fine.

Comment:

I have taken many classes with Maureen and she is easily my favourite English prof. She cares so much about her students and the texts we read. She rewards those who work hard and put in the effort to participate and engage with literature. She is a tough marker, but only because she expects the best and pushes you to get there.

This was by far the worst experience I've had in my university career. She offer late-night meetings, but the next day she will contradict you on what she previously approved that night - ending a major essay in a failing grade. Not helpful, not nice, and not understanding of students. I will NEVER take a course with her again.

This class was a nightmare. She's big on class participation, part of which is attendance and showing up on time, something that she herself is incapable of. Why should I care about this class when you clearly don't? Her tardiness and close-mindedness are incredibly disrespectful to students and creates an unsafe learning environment.

Comment:

Always late, will keep the class longer because of it. Expects you to follow her own random interpretation of MLA, not the actual rules. Cares more about proper citing than your actual writing. Marks extremely hard. Tends to get attack-y when people disagree with her opinion. The readings aren't difficult but they are life-suckingly depressing.

When I saw that Hawkins was a hard marker, I thought 'meh, I've done hard before'. Don't kid yourself. I had never failed anything in University until this course. She is an absolute nightmare as a professor. Her marking is crazy difficult. As a person she is lovely enough, but do yourself a favor and run far, far away from any of her courses.

Terrible. Absolutely terrible Prof. She made me feel like I was stupid and useless. Her classes are not lectures, they are her students coming up with answers to her questions. This would be a good thing, if she ever actually got to all of the questions. She is an extremely hard marker. Always late for class, and can be really rude at times.
