Comment:
I really enjoyed Gertler. He is very passionate about his field and he loves to talk about it. Yes, the class is boring and there is a ton of reading but Gertler does a pretty good job of synthesizing it. Dense midterm but an easy final. Cringeworthy when he uses the computer. Really nice professor though.

Show up to class, type everything he says, read the readings and you'll do well. He's very kind and passionate about what he is teaching. If you participate in class he remembers your name and is super interested in what you say.

The lectures are monotone and boring. No textbook but lots of assigned articles that are long and dry. For tests there is a lot of writing required for a very short amount of time. Seems like very knowledgable but has trouble teaching it.

Overall, one of the most difficult profs I have had. Tons of reading and he marks as though his students are grad level. Unforgiving. Instructions on paper and exams are vague. Exams are extremely long with a lot of writing. Very boring and monotone lectures that are all over the place and tough to follow along. Avoid if possible.

Michael is a great guy who wants all of his students to work towards their goals and aspirations. Of all professors i've had in University, I would easily say he was one of the most knowledgeable on a myriad of subjects. SOC 206 was one of those classes where the saying "you only get what you put into it" really applies. A bit boring, very fair.

This class is boring beyond belief. No textbook but you have to read a ton of really long dry articles and you won't pass if you don't do the reading. Exams are hard and require insane amounts of writing in a short time period. Nice guy, seems knowledgeable, always open for conversation but I would not recommend this class.

The whole class is article based and you need to read them for tests. No textbook, though. Dry subject matter but he's quite knowledgeable. It's not an easy class but it wasn't unbearable if you put the work in.

Really interesting class. I very much enjoyed the paper, thought it was a cool topic and appreciated how open-ended it was. Not easy, though. Hard work.

Lectures are dull, the prof reads directly off the slide/what he highlighted in an article. Prof's comments on paper were extremely rude and offensive to my belief system. (Paper was about a community you are/were involved with.)DON'T TAKE A CLASS WITH MICHAEL GERTLER!

Very unorganized. Class was just a paper and a final. The readings were just random articles and a small textbook. Gives no indication as to what will be on the exam and is very vauge about how the paper should be. Avoid this prof and class!

Terrible professor. His guidelines for papers and tests are extremely unclear and he often contradicts himself. I'm a 90's student and have been getting mid 70's in his terrible class. Avoid him at all costs!!! He is dull, boring, and impossible to get a good mark from.

Comment:
This professor manages to make Rural Sociology even more boring than the title sounds. In addition to the midterm, there are two large assignments with very unclear guidelines. An extremely large amount of articles are used in place of a textbook. Lots of required reading for a second year class... I wish I would have avoided this awful class.

Fantastic teacher. Extremely helpful, takes a lot of time out to make sure that questions are answered. Stories are meandering, but always interesting. Not overly easy...
