Gertz is the nicest guy you ever meet. I loved this class, and I had never taken programming before. His tests are open notes and open book. The assignments cover the material very well and you learn a lot. Do yourself a favor and take this class. You'll love it!!!

Excellent teacher. has taught this class for years and it shows. well organized and very fair grading. exams will KILL you... but curves well. If you are willing to work, you will have no trouble with him. very approachable for office hours. expects good students, don't expect to slide through his class.

I am not really interested in databases after taking his class. His course focuses too much on theory (query opt, transation, relation algebra). His HW sets are decent, but his tests are long. However, he does grade fairly and is somewhat helpful in OHs.
