Comment:

Dr. Ruse makes Philosophy and Film entertaining with his sarcastic sense of humor, while also teaching you how to communicate your philosophical views to a group that may not agree with you. Your grade consists of 15, 450-550 word essays, with only 10 counting in the grade. Just enjoy the class and connect with Ruse and your grade will be fine.

He is not necessarily a tough grader persay, but it's difficult to predict how he will grade your papers. In our class, the only work is writing a 500 word paper each week after watching a movie all of class. The lowest 2 grades are dropped, no exams. No textbook, short lectures.

I'm really torn on how to review him. On one hand, he and his lectures are very interesting and engaging and I had a ton of fun taking this class. On the other hand, I feel like his vagueness on the essay topics and the way he grades them so harshly make it impossible to get an A. I love him as a person and this course, but his grading is suspect.

While both he and his seminar are very interesting he is not very clear as to what he wants in the weekly five hundred word essay. His grading is bazar and his feedback is basically useless. The movies he choose to show were also not particularly interesting but overall the class was okay.

Fun class. the discussions are pretty casual. one 500 word paper per week, but you can skip up to three of them. He won't give you lower than an 80%, but his grading system is sort of unclear and he doesn't care if you want an A in the class. He has a nice sense of humor and chats with students at the beginning of class. It was a good experience.

he's hilarious and really, really smart...genius-like. class has ups and downs but he's a cool person. has written interesting books too. i totally recommend him.

The class is fun, lots of discussion, I wouldn't say he is nearly as terrible as some of these posts make him out to be. A funny old british man.. and gives you candy and dresses up on halloween! Makes fun of himself not only others. His grading on papers is the only thing that left me confused.. but still did well.

I've known this guy for awhile now and I think that he is sometimes more digestible as an womanizing acquaintance than as a teacher. There are times in class when I thought that he really didn't care about being there. The grade that I received in his Biology & Conflict course didn't reflect the quantity and quality of effort I put into the class.

Terrible. I was really looking forward to taking this class and with this prof; what a disappointment. The grading procedure is extremely vague; he often acts like he would rather not be in the class; and worse, I learned only very little more than what I would have learned had I just studied the material on my own. A complete waste of time.

He seemed like a very difficult professor at first. He turned out to be a very fair teacher. He can be initmidating at times, but really does want to help his students succed.
