Comment:
Berghof is very caring of his students and is lenient on due dates since he knows his students have other classes to work on. His lectures are dull and he mumbles so its hard to follow along sometimes but his review sheets for the midterm and final helped immensely.

Took him for Humcore 1B/1C. He really cares for his students and understands how busy they can get during the year. Provides informative feedback for essays and makes office hours available anytime his students need it.

Berghof can get off-topic at times but you can tell that he truly cares about you doing well in the class. I really liked how he was understanding of your situation outside of class such as having other midterms/finals. He always tries his best to make sure that you have time to contact him about your writing. Overall a great professor who cares.

Very sweet professor who will dedicate his time and make sure your essay is the best it can be. Pay attention to lecture and have some knowledge of the readings, and it shouldnt be too much of a struggle.

20-minute office hours (not helpful). Ambiguous grading criteria and nit-picky expectations on essays particularly, and subjective to his personal ideas when grading them. You can't get a clear and concise answer from him. Unable to answer student questions without ranting for half an hour. Does little to facilitate proper learning. Slow grader.

Overall class is pretty interesting, you must attend class since new films are shown each class. Lectures can be boring at times when students don't participate is discussions. He is very soft spoken so sit in the front because he does not yell.

He is an awesome TA! If you get him, count your blessings. He is understanding with deadlines and homework assignments and is extremely approachable. Gives very clear feedback on essays. As long as you do the reading, listen to his edits, and participate in class, that class will be smooth sailing. Hope I get him again.

Professor Berghof is one of the best LTWR professors at CSUSM. Initially, any class may seem slower paced than other courses, but his classes are designed for long term knowledge rather than test memorization. As long as you do the reading and show genuine effort on essays, you will get an A. He wants exploration of ideas rather than arguments.

A very nice and thoughtful prof. The atmosphere in disc. is comfortable and not intimidating. Can ramble at times but is very wise. Tries to make office hrs available for everyone, even on weekends sometimes. Hardly any hw, which is either good or bad depending on what you make of it. I liked having less structure. Would take his section again.

He's a really nice guy, although the class structure was very unclear. There were pretty much no mandatory homework assignments, unlike the other discussion sections. You can't really ask him a simple question without getting a half-hour response, and by that time you forget what you originally asked. He helped me a lot with my essays though.

He is a fantastic professor. He is very determined to help his students succeed, and offers many opportunities to meet with him outside of class for advice on the essays. He even took time out on a Saturday to meet with a few of us who were unable to meet during the previous week. As long as you are willing to put in the effort, you will succeed.

It is ridiculous how nice he is. It's true though: he goes on crazy tangents and you probably won't see your essay again for a long long time. But I didn't care. He was an easy grader and very approachable during office hours.

Discussions seemed pointless. I couldn't follow along. He talked about things somewhat related to the works but i guess it was just too academic for me. He may ask a question or two from discussion, but the midterm and final were pretty easy. Writing portion wasn't that bad. I remember EDC somehow was related and talked about, that was amusing.

WORST TA EVER! it has been 3 weeks since we turned in our 2nd essay and we still havent gotten them back. He still hasnt given 2 students their 1st essay back. he leaves class early and tells us to stay and do our work & tells us not to email him over the weekend cuz he wont have his laptop. our last class before the final..we ended 30 mins early!!

WORST ta ever. he does not prepare you for midterm or final. he goes over useless stuff. my class had no idea what to write for their essays or how to study for midterms and finals. we had to ask our previous ta's for their class work for help. HORRIBLE teacher.

Very easy grader. Didn't grade and return 1st essay for 3 & 1/2 weeks & didn't return midterm for 5 weeks. Good GPA maintaining class, but not intellectually challenging. Often goes off on random tangents. When a student asks a question, he usually spends a long time telling them something that isn't the answer to their question.

Great teacher. Had discussions in the park to discuss the readings on many occasions. He took us to on-campus seminars to expose us to more things than just humanities. Grades very slowly and rarely returns papers, but homework can be turned in anytime. Gives great feedback when needed and during office hours. Opened research project to ANY topic.
