Professor Zunz is a great professor, but he speaks very low and it is sometimes hard to understand him. It is important to do the readings and to attend class! When you can hear him, he definitely makes good points about the topic at hand. There is usually no time for questions so much sure that you get all of that in during your discussion. The re

Zunz is a fantastic guy and VERY knowledgable on the topic of a philanthropy. The class was only three essays and the rest participation, so it wasn't very difficult. Keep up with the reading (about two hours a week), and you will be fine. TAKE THIS CLASS!

Don't bother buying the book full of speeches that he assigns. Most can be found online and few readings come from there. Don't buy the other textbook either! Go go class and listen to the lectures. Also, the TA that you get MATTERS! They grade EVERYTHING (papers and exams)! This class may be boring for non-history majors but Zunz is likable.

Sweet guy, but his lectures are the kind that put you to sleep. Nothing is posted anywhere, so you have to go to lectures to get the information. Not too hard if you do most of the reading and listen to lectures.

The class is interesting but there is too much reading. It is not an easy class at all and even though lectures are not mandatory if you don't go you're pretty much screwed. I would recommend not taking the class if you want an A.

It has been a while since i took his class - and I have tried to forget it. Easily the worst class I took at UVa. I hope he has changed.

People think his accent is hard to follow and he's too into himself. I think he's a nice guy with really engaging lectures. There is a lot of reading and a lot of work, but it's really interesting. Only complaint--we have to print off our course packet--I used 3 ink cartridges for his class alone.

Graduated many years ago -- but he is a blot on my otherwise perfect impression of the University. He is very impressed with himself, and it is NOT justified.

Urban history was a great class, although it focused on Detroit, Zunz's favorite city. Zunz is an engaging professor, even funny, and lectures were very organized. Hey, if he forgot his notes, he'd already written several books on the subject.

Zunz is the man. Urban History was a great class, with a bias toward Detroit and the industrial cities. He chooses three or four books, all of which are excellent. He *does* emphasize structural factors with regard to race problems, so conservatives be forewarned.

Graduate some time ago, but I found Zunz to be someone who really had an agenda in approaching history. Seemed to be rather egotistical and did not respond fairly to student comments unless they fit his preconceived notions. Basically, a pompous boor.
