I have nothing against theory or that this class was a requirement, Jay was just not very pleasant. He loves to hear himself talk, even when students are trying to get a word in. He'll use what you said you lead into whatever he had to say. His voice is so dry and grating. The class wasn't too hard but if you can take it with someone else DO SO!

Prof. Jay is obviously incredibly smart, though I was not a huge fan of this class. I found him very intimidating and unapproachable. When students would raise their hands, he was often condescending and begrudgingly approving of answers (at best). I was honestly afraid to participate for fear of being shot down.

This class turned out to be much harder. There is A LOT of reading at a fast pace. Little time to analyze the novels we read. 4 papers, which sounds nice, but they are grading as if everyone in the class is an english major.

Great, great teacher. He is extremely interested in the subject and his class. Very passionate and smart. Participation is not mandatory but he does give fifteen pop quizzes over the semester (I missed a few and came out just fine). Take him.

I don't think Dr. Jay recognizes that he is teaching a course full of senior level English majors as he continues to discuss the exact same topics on each novel we read. He does not allow variance in the discussion rather he prescribes the discussion topics before class (which have been the same throughout the duration of the semester).

Easy class and the literature that you read is actually interesting and worthwhile reading. For an Intensive Writing class it's very very easy and the number of essays you write is probably 4 maybe 5 total. You can write what ever you want for your final. Great teacher, lots of stories, total hippy.

God, I'm sure his postcolonial classes are better, but I HATED this class. I think that a theoretical class should engage students in meaningful dialogue-but it's like he loves to hear the sound of his own voice, not ours. V. easy tho, and attendance isn't a factor in your grade, what?! I would recommend trying to take another professor.

U'll learn to write/think critically in this class I nev knew writing an essay could hit on such technical concepts Jay is knowledgable it can get exhaustive at times 3essays:use class concepts dont add in too many of ur own twists, fair grader will challenge u laidback &nice pretty easy so take it!

paul jay teaches the most enlightening class an english major can take. you know nothing about literature until you take critical theory with him. he is helpful, laid back, but insanely smart. he will teach you to think with your whole brain.

Very interesting material and he obviously enjoys what he does. The class is worth taking just to become familiar with the material. Warning: make your papers as basic as possible, avoid creativity. He wants to know that you understand the basics covered in class. Think dry and obvious.

It was actually a really good class. It was pretty interesting, good class discussions. This was a writing intensive class, so it was 1-2 page commentaries each week, 3 five page papers and a take home final. Not too bad.
