Paul is a very helpful teacher whose lectures are extremely well planned and organized to assist you in understanding linguistics. He has a, somewhat, weird sense of humor that will make you smile rather than laugh out loud. Homework assignments really help you grasp the subject matter. Take a lot of notes to reference later for tests & homework.

Lectures are extremely well-planned and crystal clear. There is homework every week but assignments are designed in a way that really contributes to understanding of the subject. The instructor teaches class with humor and a genuine interest in students' learning. This was an excellent class.

I'm an English major and perhaps it is my doom that I despise linguists, but this class was as pleasant as it could be for those requiring, but not particularly interested in the subject. I was not inspired, but I managed to make it to class for tests and homework to pass.

Good all around. No surprises on exams, plenty of review. He wants students to succeed, but doesn't pull any punches. Tends to explain all concepts in the same detail, even simple ones. Attend class, follow along in the workbook, and it's an easy class. His jokes are groaners, but that's kind of the point.

DO NOT MISS CLASS! Otherwise, very prompt homework return, three tests have reviews in packet, homework is constant but essential. You should not put off the large written project until the end, as it is really very manageable when broken down. Class is never out early though. Well worth the work, as you understand more about the English lang.

This IS a HARD class but his workbook is invaluable - text sucks but don't use much. He is very entertaining and appears to truly love his work. We laugh alot with him and keeps you awake in late night class. I think he's a great teacher for such a dificult subject (to learn and teach).

I really learned alot from this class. I want to major in Linguistics and he was the perfect teaher to ease anyone into the field. Thier is a lot of work involved but if you really put forth an effort you will do fine.

This guy's class is HARD, but it's challenging in a good way. If you really get into it, you read *all* of the assigned reading before *every* class, you pay attention in class and you ask for clarification you *will* get an A. Also, don't take too many notes, you'll just fall behind. It's all in the book anyway. Paul made me a Linguistics major.

he's good at lecturing but in my opinion he's arrogant and is in love with his own voice. Doesn't really welcome questions or comments. his grading system does suck. I barely got a B, due to some mistakes on the graded homeworks and exit exercises, etc. there's no way to make up points.

Wow such a hard subject. It is impossible to get caught up if you miss a class. Lots of HW, hard tests, and no make-up or late work. I got a B on my 1st and 3rd test, bombed the 2nd, and despite doing HW and quizzes ended up with a D. His grading system sucks, if you have a bad test your done!

I thought I was watching a tennis match! He bounces around the room, and is very high energy. Great professor. He's won't change your grade because you cried, so if you get an 89, you'll wind up with a B. Borrow the book, don't buy it.
