I took the summer course and had to go to class for over two hours everyday, and still enjoyed it. He really loves his work so it makes things a lot more interesting. There is no textbook, just notes from lecture. There were a few random books that he made us read throughout the course that vaguely yet interestingly pertained to the subject.

You have probably already noticed that there are weekly essays, so I won't reiterate that. Dr. Sutter is a good teacher, and earned personal points from me when I was really sick during the midterm and he let me make it up with him, and graded it himself! If you don't like work, it isn't the class for you but any hist. class has the same amount.

Interesting lectures, however, unless you want to spend every thursday night reading a book and writing a one page reaction essay this is graded EXTREMELY harshly then you probably shouldn't take him.

Professor Sutter is a good teacher. He'll tell you that he hates lecture style classes, but he is good at it. He presents information clearly. He is well- learned, but still has a sense of humor. The only but VERY IMPORTANT negative is there is an essay due every week in the breakout sessions. You have to do the breakout reading!

Sutter is a great teacher!! The class was definitely challenging but enjoyable. Im now a history minor because of this class. Weekly essays are hard to get used to. Pretty much everyone fails the first one but they get easier. I would definitely recommend Sutter for this class, but with the warning that you do have to work for your grade!

He knows his stuff, but this class requires a lot of outside work. The readings each week were most of the time very hard to get through and you have an essay due every week that the TA's grade harshly. The lectures are not mandatory but he does give pop quizzes sometimes. Go to every breakout though. Midterm and Final arent too bad, just STUDY!

TA's graded first essay super hard, but eased up after that. Sutter reads from paper for his lectures, which is kind boring. The exams(2) were essay exams in which he would pick around fifty terms that u would memorize and write an essay describing each in a papragraph and how they relate in a third paragraph. He also gave a few pop quizzes.TAKE HIM!

Awesome teacher, and has a vast knowledge of the subject matter. The RE's are hard, but you write 20 of them so the grades improve and make up for themselves. Good class! Good material! Good teacher!

don't expect to get more than a C on the reaction papers. The professor seems nice, but most of your interaction will be with the TAs who for the most part have a stick up their butts!

I agree that the reaction essays don't help understand subject matter, but they will help your grade probably. Tests were not bad: he gave us about 25 terms and the test was three short essays, each involving two of the terms. Sutter is a great guy, funny, with interesting lectures.

Reaction essays are a complete waste of time and do not serve to increase your understanding of the material. You can get an A in this class but be prepared to work hard. The TA's grade pretty hard across the board. The upside to this course is that the professor is a good orator but sometimes I took serious issue with the material he presented.

Reaction papers each week are the key. 30% of your grade! Also, go to EVERY breakout... 10% of grade. He is very knowledgeable and a good teacher, but only take the class if you want to memorize terms for ESSAY tests. The final is long.I figured out at the end that attending lecture isnt too necessary except for the one or two quizzes.

reaction essays SUCK!! the TAs are really the problem in this course, not the professor because the TAs will grade all your stuff. He does give you terms for the tests though, so that helps a lot. Don't be fooled by the first chapter of After the Fact, t was interesting but every chapter is downhill form there.

Very hard, weekly reaction essays are impossible to get over a C on. Overall, he's very nice but the TA's need to lighten up on the grading, we're not all history majors...

The class lecture's were not interesting. He would prepare a lecture and it was like listening to a lecture from the 1800s. He had break out groups that were so much work. You had to write reaction papers that are graded very strictly by a TA. You pretty much read 30 pages and have to condense your thoughts to one page, if over you get a zero.

Just to make sure, I took the US History after 1812. It was required for graduation, so was expecting to suffer through it. However, Sutter made this class so interesting, and it was challenging..if you want an A you have to do well on the papers. the test

Great professor! Even though we were in a huge lecture class, he made it interesting, and he would sometimes just ask us questions out of the blue. He kept me interested in the class. The tests weren't too hard, but the papers could be. I highly recommend this class!

This was my favorite class from the whole semester! Sutter is a great teacher! Maybe one of the best here. I wish all my teachers could be like him. If you take notes in class you will do fine. A lot of writing involved but is very easy!Highly Recommended!!
