Though his class was difficult I would take it again. I enjoyed his creative criticisms and encouragement. If you are in it to learn then take a class from Professor Townend. If you are in it to get easy grades go to a community college. Townend isn't easy but you will learn and look back on the semester gratified by the experience.

If you don't like history, don't take him. If you do like history, then you'll really get a lot out of his class. Be prepared to read the textbook because he doesn't cover what is on the quizzes (every Friday) in class. About 5 papers about books I didn't enjoy. Not very clear about what he wanted in the papers. A lot of work for a 100 level class.

Townend is a great professor! He's a little bit of a mess, as in he lost 2 of my papers, but he talked to me about it and gave me acknowledged that he lost them. His lectures were very good, but he occasionally gets off track. His exam was 15 written identifications, a short essay, and a long essay. Don't be intimidated, if you're prepared it's ok!

As a history major, Dr Townend was by far my favorite professor. He never failed to engage in great discussions. Do the readings the best you can (sometimes they can get overwhelming - don't fret) and go to class. A very rewarding experience!

I absolutely love Dr. Townend, I took HST 317- Northern Ireland from 1880 with him. He was so excited about the subject that it made me even more excited about it. If you ever get a chance to take him, no matter the course you should definitely do it. Besides being a great professor he is a genuinely good person to know.

I took Townend for The Age of Napoleon. Based on this class I would recommend avoiding this professor. His lectures were the equivalent of reading a wikipedia article (ie, no analysis). After taking nearly every professor in the UNCW history department, I can say that his class was by far the most boring. He is not a talented lecturer.

I have never found history interesting until taking this class. AWESOME professor who really wants his students to learn. Tests are a pretty challenging but he gives a study guide with exactly what you need to know. The best professor I have ever had or heard of. Definitely take his class if you can

Good teacher, actually made history interesting. You have to read three books and write papers on them but it wasnt so bad. You can only miss 3 classes and there's a quiz once a week so i wouldnt do MWF b/c its always on friday. Other than that he was very helpful and enthusiastic about history. I would recommend him especially for non-hist major

Great professor but the class is a LOT of work. Several outside books to read and essays. He makes the information very interesting though, he is very knowledgeable...and not bad to look at either.

He is an AWESOME professor! Always more than willing to help out after class. You read three books and some out of the texts, a lot easier than some other history courses. Better idea to pay attention to his lecture than to write what he puts on the board (that stuff is more or less just to help him keep himself on track). TAKE HIM IF YOU CAN!! :P

3 small papers on primaries and articles instead of one big research paper. Easy if you read the stuff and don't listen to him.

DO NOT TAKE his freshman seminar class!! (or any freshman seminar class for that matter) There is a lot of busy work. You have to attend 5 events and write papers on them, complete a long complicated portfolio project and there are quizzes and journals due every week! You have at least one paper or assingment or quiz due every class. VERY ANNOYING!
