Prof. Herlan was probably one of the tougher math teachers there, but he definitely knew his stuff and was good at explaining things and had a pretty good dry sense of humor that made the class more fun than it would otherwise have been.

Great professor! Good sense of humor. I had him for Calc I & II. He knew his math and I really learned a lot from him. It's sad that he retired, or I would have taken calc 3 with him.

Great sense of humor and really knows what he's saying. Reviews are similar to tests. He teaches you what you need to know for the tests so there are few, if any, surprises. I feel that the poor comments on here come from poor students. Good teacher.

He's one of the better math teachers in the department, and he has such an unusual sense of humor. He has a passion for triple integrals and garlic.

Took Herlan because I got a D the first time I took Calc3, with Bolli. He was great; funny, but not as rude in his humor as Bolli. Tests werent as hard as Bolli's, he was very clear, and he is overall a great teacher. I will take him again if I have the opportunity.

Herlan is awesome! He loves to joke in between exercises and is reasonable clear. Listen to what he is saying as well as what he writes down, for a laugh and for comprehension of the material. Also helps to read ahead.... That goes for any math class though.

I had Phil Herlan for Calc 1-3. He is/was a tremendous educator. Perhaps a little gruff outwardly, but very caring to his students. He *wants* you to succeed and will go out of his way if you ask for help. Thanks for everything, Phil.

The tests given are completely different from the material learned in class. He did not prepare me at all for what was on the test, then when I went in to see him during his hours about it and ask how to do some of what I got wrong on the test, he made some quip about my score and said that I should have done better, all without actually helping me

Phil Herlan is a very interesting teacher. His sense of humor takes some getting used to but his passion for math shines. His tests are not a walk in the park but are more than managable. Warning: department finals are very hard, but if you study the review sheets which he will personally go over in class, you should be fine. Great teacher!

Dont take Herlan. He's trash. He basically makes fairly easy tests throughout the year so everyone can be doing well and feel confident. then when the final comes around nobody is prepared because he flat out sucks at teaching the material. he can't justify anything he does on the board. can't approach him, very grumpy, just don't take him!

herlan has a magic ability find ways to solve equations by pulling them out of his ass and popping it on the board. he always does extremely easy problems in class but the course coordinator uses the hardest problems for the final and the homework. i hear herlans tests are the easiest and id believe that

Great Instructor! Very clear in his presentation of the material. He is sarcastic and has a dry sense of humor. He will notice if you do not attend class. If you are showing up to class and making an effort he will not hesitate to help you out. I definately recommend taking any of his classes.

Bottom line about this professor is that he doesn't really care about helping you or about whether you pass or fail. I went to his office for help during office hours, and he all but refused to help me, because I "should just know this". Only take him if you can learn on your own, only from the book. His lectures don't prepare you for his tests.

Unfair grader, went off topic too much, not very good at teaching overall concepts, just at teaching technique for certain classes of problems.

Bad teacher, I went into this class (Calc. I and II) knowing calculus from high school and came out of it seemingly knowing less. He is very confusing and not very nice or helpful. He is very boring too. The tests are pretty hard and I had to retake the class. I hear most people fail the final...

He is a great teacher! I am pretty upset that I won't be able to have him for calc 2 thanks to having to take another class at that time. :/
