I LOVED Dr. Kaplan's Ancient Rome class. I learned so much from him. To pass his classes and his exams you HAVE to do the readings. The few projects and papers in his class were pretty easy and straightforward, and he's a very fair grader. If you just read what he assigns, you'll pass his exam. Also? He's pretty handsome.

He knows a lot but is very pretentious. If you're not prepared to give it your all every single class, if you're 5 mins late every now and again, if you're the type of student who relies on your professor to be realistic with his expectations, this is not the professor for you. I usually pull B's at the worst, walked away from this class with a D.

Professor Kaplan is laid back and knows exactly what he's talking about. The readings are sort of interesting. However, he doesn't actually lecture and tell you straightforward information, but rather talks about the readings and has class discussions. If you like that, the class is definitely for you. If you don't like speaking, class is awkward.

Dr. Kaplan is brilliant. Lectures are full of discussion. Lectures are picture powerpoint so you have to take good notes. He lets you know EXACTLY what is expected from him. 2 short 500 word papers, one 5 page paper, online map project, participation, midterm & final. Extremely helpful and he knows his material!! Took him twice this semester.

The class consisted mostly of class discussion with hardly any lecture. Personally, I would have liked more lecture where he was actually teaching, not just prompting class discussion. I just wish he would have given us more information and facts rather than just asking us what we thought of the material.

He is really all over the place. Ancient Rome was so confusing. He would tandem jump and you would lose track of what was said. Skip him.

2 small papers & 1longer one, a map project, 2 tests & 1 group presentation. Overall, as long as you take notes & read the book, you can get at least a B+. He tells you EXACTLY what he expects for the tests and gives you extra credit opportunity. He's a dry lecturer sometimes so don't take this class during the midday slump time like I did (3-4:15)

Kaplan is a pretty dry lecturer but he's specific in what he expects of you test-wise & will always answer your Q's after class or by email. You will read a LOT for this class & do class discussion boards. He offers extra credit on every test and there's short papers, 600-1700 words. Read everything & do the study guide & you can get at least a B+.

Second class with Dr. Kaplan, enjoy his lectures felt this class had too much in it. Long period and vast area. Using BB made it easier for the exams because he would allow student to post terms which he would choose for the exam, he also gave a map to study for the exam. Made it easier for the exam, participation is important in the class.

BEWARE!!! This class is painful. If you have absolutely no other option and are forced to take this class then be ready to claw your eyes out. After a few weeks, going to lecture is worthless because his PPTS are just pictures. The only person that matters is your breakout leader, they are the ones who actually teach you. Avoid at all cost!!!!!!!

AVOID AT ALL COSTS IF YOU ARE NOT AN AUDITORY LEARNER! Dr. Kaplan does nothing but talk.. This would be great if what he said and any sort of organization to it. His power points are useless; picture with no words on them. Attendance policy is unreasonable. Lectures are boring and dry. Do not take unless you are extremely interested in the subject

Interesting class, Dr. Kaplan knows his stuff and after taking his class if you pay attention you will learn things. Some of the assignments I found a little hard because they were unclear. 1-Google Map, 2-Blogs, 1-Paper, Midterm, Final. Tests are in 4 parts: location, terms definition, passage identification, and essay. Prepare to work hard.

Do not take if you are going to be absent more than 4 times. It doesn't matter if you were hospitalized for the fifth absence he will not take a note. There is a lot of reading, typically in an unreasonable amount of time. He talks about how you have to know the history, but there is none because the Greeks made it all up. Very confusing.

Kaplan rocks. Class was boring for me until I started really following along with the readings. This guy knows a ton about his subject, and if you're attending college for more than just the degree than this class is one you should take. Read the textbook!!!

Such a tough class. The main problem I have is I never got anything back. You submit everything online he grades it online you get the grade you have and there's no explanation as to why you got the grade that you did. Taking 3 other classes I don't have time to go to his office to find out.

DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE NOT A HISTORY MAJOR. Definitely very knowledgeable, but unable to understand that some people have no background in history. Expects you to follow lectures intently. 2 short papers, a midterm, Google Earth project, long paper, and final. 4 absences are allowed before your grade drops. Reconsider before signing up.
