Comment:
I see a lot of people who took 227 didn't like his class but to be honest, his class was straightforward and I enjoyed it. His lectures are long and he isn't good at presenting them BUT he does have good slides which are helpful and he is a fair grader. Finals and midterm are from slides nd I never even looked at the textbook and got a decent grade

Comment:
HORRIBLE Lecturer. Lectures are long, quiet, unclear, and boring. His lectures slides are disorganized, and he is unable to finish one topic per class. Professor Oxhorn is clearly very knowledgable on development studies, but this does not carry over to his teaching. Exams are unclear and difficult.

Comment:
Prof. Oxhorn is very knowledgeable on the subject of development, but that does not carry over into his course. He is a confusing, boring lecturer and gives EXTREMELY unfair exams. Nothing "taught" goes deep enough into analysis to understand WHY its important. I feel like I have learned nothing in this course so far. Would not recommend.

Philip Oxhorn graduated from Harvard, so he expected too much from students. He is not a good lecturer, perhaps he has to take care of many things when he is Chair of Department of Political Science and Director of International Development Studies.

Comment:
He is not a good professor. Way too many readings and unreasonable expectations for his exams (memorizing the content, authors, and titles of 50 articles for the midterms, only to ID 3 of them?) and the class really should be called "The Importance of Civil Society" instead of "Democracy and the Market." Extremely disappointing.

Very nice guy, expert in his field, not a bad lecturer. However, doesn't really know how to teach or structure a course, assigns WAY too many readings, not terribly interested in students. Poor educator.

Not a true comparative course. Oxhorn mainly focuses on civil society and democracy in all the case studies. Exams are fair, but mainly based on regurgitation, particularly ID heavy. Oxhorn is unhelpful in office hours, he seems to portray an attitude of general disinterest in his students. Do not recommend highly.

Be prepared to work very hard. Lots of readings, lectures hard to follow because language very technical. I recorded them with a portable recorder. If no past knowledge of politics you will have a hard time. However always willing to stop lecture anytime and answer questions, if you have problems GO TO HIM! and he will help. But tough course.

Expert in his field. He isn't superman, so don't expect him to make political science fun. For a survey course you will be sure to learn quite a bit about the region in general, especially the politics.

Great Prof!! knows his stuff and presents balanced points of view. Lots of reading that he articulates in lectures...don't expect he'll deliver everything, do your readings and ask questions you'll be fine.
