great professor! grades papers hard, but on improvement. read the plays and you'll ace the quizzes, which greatly cushion your grade. discussions are interesting for the most part. i feel like my writing improved immensely. take Stokes.

Great professor! Class can become a little monotonous at times, but the plays are interesting for the most part. She grades papers hard, but also on improvement, so if you try, she'll notice and you're grade will go up. Class is cancelled often and syllabus is constantly revised, so you only write about 3-4 papers per term

One of my favorite classes at furman and I don't even like english. Class discussions are fun and entertaining. Do your reading and you'll ace the quizzes which is necessary because she grades papers TOUGH. but she'll make you a better writer and is willing to give you a lot of help. LOVE HER

Dr. Stokes is a great teacher. I absoultely LOVED her class. Definitely not an easy A, but she is always willing to help you out with your papers if you go and talk to her. Weekly quizzes are a real grade booster and the plays you read are surprisingly pretty good.

prof. stokes is the funniest, most interesting professor at furman. she is always available at any time of day or night and expects you to contact her with troubles. however, she is the hardest paper grader ive ever encountered. take the class but be prepared to work very hard. i think only one person out of 20 got an A in the class.

Love her to death. I hated English before I came to Furman, took her for Eng 11 Sex & Gender, then signed up for her again with Eng 12. She is a hard grader on the papers but quizzes are a breeze & mostly plot type questions. Great debates and interesting opinions. Work hard on papers, communicate with her & be open minded and you will do fine.

AMAZING! Ms. Stokes grades tough but it will only make you better. She knows what she is talking about and will take your thinking and writing to the next level. I was truly dissappointed when class was canceled (which is frequently).

mrs stokes was THE best english teacher i have ever had! before coming to furman, i had never been introduced to "analytical" style writing. but she worked with me and showed me how they were written. she made me more confident in my writing. i love her!

Mrs. Stokes definitely helped me become a better writer, as she was always willing to talk about a paper and give suggestions. She answers your emails quickly and provides relevant advice. Be prepared, though, to have to read liberal and feminist works. She has very strong opinions and you cannot get around them. Overall good teacher.
