Although he definitely has strong opinions (rather than being "independent" as he claims) it's quite possible to learn a lot from this guy. He grades on 4 papers alone, with little discussion of them in class. However, he really knows how to foster educated debate. If you like to talk about controversial issues, you'll look forward to this class.

He has a bad habit of laughing every time he thinks he's made a point. I find it really uncomfortable. Grade based on 4 papers, very opinionated, although he touts himself as being "independent." I wouldn't take his class again, but if you can sit and humor him all semester, it is an easy 'A'. Textbook not necessary.

He was the most degrating teacher I have ever experience. He belittled everyone in the class and I hated every minute of it! It is not a hard class, but be prepared for him to make you feel aweful.

Grade based on 4 papers and 10-word vocab test every Friday. He has a weird format for the papers. Showing up to class is pointless b/c all you do is give your opinion about someone in your textbook while he argues your point. He gave me a B and I didn't turn in the first paper so I can't complain. Better have a grasp on writing essays beforehand.

He's a nice guy and I like that he starts class discussions, but he's totally disorganized and often seems like he doesn't know what he's talking about. He talks crap on atheists, and that leads me to believe he's not nearly as open minded as he's trying to pass himself off as. His lectures are worthless because your grade is based on papers that are concerned with reading materials that have almost nothing to do with the class. He also has a way of not listening to students and misunderstanding questions.

Good teacher!!!! Your grade is based on four papers. He makes you think on your own without pressing his ideas upon the students. He is a fair man, and class can be entertaining if you come in with an open mind, ready to discuss your paper's topic.

Scott was an awesome teacher! DO NOT BE INTIMIDATED BY HIM! He really is brilliant and challenges you again and again, it is to make you have a strong argument. I almost left his class after getting a "C" on my first paper. After understanding th

he would always make us speak our thoughts out loud in class, but then he always had a way of making you feel like an idiot for what you just said. well that was the way i felt anyway. he made me feel uncomfortable speaking in class.

Great class to prepare students for "real" college. Papers are long... most 10-16 pages I found but those were the only assignments in the class. Discussions in class were fun. All around I found him to be a great teacher... but quite challenging

this professor sucks if you're not used to teaching yourself...thankfully i am so it wasn't a huge deal...but the entire class was based on 4 written papers that you hand in, no tests which i thought would be nice but turned out to be a nightmare...he does accept the papers late and is very generous with the late grading...

He seems not to want to interact much with students. For the student, it is more of an independent-study style of learning. You must learn about the topics on your own without any sort of background info from the instructor.

Scott's confrontational style tends to alienate students and create a great deal of tension in the classroom. His lectures are disorganized, and there is no clear delineation of topics being discussed. He does seem to be quite knowledgable, though.

The man is brilliant, and a wonderful philosopher. Likes to get students involved in discussion during class. He assigns some wild paper topics, also. The grading style is a little interesting. However, Phil. in a class setting is sort of challenging.
