First Soc class I attempted was with this guy. He was unreasonable and ridiculed his students for expressing any points of view he didn't personally hold. You could work as hard as you wanted, but if you didn't pucker up hardcore, g.f.l. passing. Thankfully Houghton booted him before the damage he cause was completely irreversible.

I was a sociology student at Houghton 10 yrs ago--Dr. Perkins was the toughest professor and I am glad I stuck through it! Definitely my favorite professor of all time.

I didn't know what sociology was before I took it here and he made it incredibly interesting. I'm a sociology minor because of his wit and level of intellectualism in the classroom. He takes a while to get used to, but I've learned more from him than most of my profs combined.

I can see how people would love Dr. Perkins in a classroom setting. He is very knowledgeable and clearly tries to stretch his students. However, his presence on the trip to Tanzania was an unmitigated disaster. He was very CLEAR in the fact that he did think we were all idiots simply because we weren't serious 100% of the time.

He forces you to work hard and to stretch streth yourself but it is well worth the effort! All of the classes I have had with him have been classes I look forward to and don't want to sleep through. His presentation of the info isn't at all dull but very applicable to real life.

Excellent in portraying an aura of intellectuality. Has an impressive vocabulary and presentation style. Don't try to "think" when writing papers. Just spew back sociological sounding words and work hard to make sure your sentences flow nicely. Content is secondary. I did this and got an A-.

Dr Perkins is tough but fair. He will also push to be a better writer. He taught me much more than Sociology. Many don't like him because he's tough. But he pushes you to be a better student and a better person. Frankly, he changed my life.

Dr. Rich Perkins teaches you to think and not merely to ingest facts. His interactive teaching style exceptionally promotes and empowers students to make analytical conections and understand concepts at the gut level. Class is fun and challenging.

Intro to soc is a very tough but rewarding class. Don't let him trick you into thinking he is an ****. he does care and doesn't think you are an idiot, but is only trying to stretch you. if you go into the class with an open mind you will learn a lot.

one of the few profs at houghton who is willing to let a student completely disagree with him without getting angry- doesn't take himself so seriously as to believe that he can't be debunked. that alone is reason enough to take a class with him!

He makes you feel like an idiot and a failure. If you go to his office hours he gives the impression that he is waiting for you to leave and that you have been there too long asking dumb questions.

The BEST professor I've had at Houghton. He makes students feel like morons, but it's worth getting over it. If you take his classes seriously and decide not to be intimidated, you'll leave the class with an unparalleled, life-changing social awareness.
