I had professor Karpiak for a Russian culture course. I found the course to be far too simplified and the lectures lacking in substance. He seemed like a nice enough person, but I always got the impression that he was seemingly preoccupied or distracted by something.

I had professor Karpiak for two courses. Although he is quite intelligent and easy going, his Russian culture courses are far too easy. (Even a survey course should have some more depth). He is a great person and is generally very approachable.

One of the easiest classes. I ended up getting over an 80, and did not learn one thing about Russia. Lectures are pointless, just make sure you get handouts. Seems to be a nice guy, but is not challenging at all. If you want a high mark take him!!

Lectures were shallow repetition of textbook or entirely dedicated to opera and church architecture. Unable to answer questions, instead told students to do the research on their own time. His midterm was ridiculously easy, but worth almost nothing. The rest of mark was based on three essays on topics unreleated to lectures. Relied on videos.

Honestly, one of the worst lecturers I've ever experienced. As a person he is very kind, but that doesn't change how ridiculously pointless his lectures are. He can't seem to finish a thought, and all the while, he stutters. Thus, when examination time comes, trying to assemble your lecture notes into any coherent sense is impossible.

Professor Karpiak I've found is a very relaxed and knowledgable professor, one who can both learn from his students and teach a great deal at the same time. Will spend any amount of time ensuring that his students are clear on a certain point. Learning the art of translation with his assistance has been a very neat exercise.

Great guy! Sometimes it is really hard to get what he is trying to explain, but still he is great. Kind, easy going if you need an extension. Knows his stuff, but has troubles explaining it. You can argue with him about anything related to the course with no consequences. Awesome in small class.
