Reasonable easy class. Must attend every meeting because all the exam material comes from lecture. 5 take home essays and 2 exams. Take good notes of his lectures and study them for the tests. Follow his instructions for take homes and you will get an A. Very helpful and good at responding via email any questions students have.

He does not give out study guides for the exams. He says there is nothing he does not want us to know, which makes it really hard to study because we take A LOT of notes every class. if you can retain information easily then this is a good class for you. I just cant write notes and listen to what he is saying at the same time. The movies are great

Anth1 is a pure lecture class with the occasional video. Your grade is pretty much based on the five essays and two exams. He doesn't give lecture slides out, so it's pretty much you go to class and take notes w/o listening or you don't know what's going on in this class. You NEED to know how to study purely from notes.

Those that do no do their work, and do not know how to study... do not take this class if you are looking for an A. Simpkins is probably one of the most best teachers at De Anza offering a real college education experience. He will present students with a challenge and is very willing to help.

Anth 1 w/ Simpkins was one my fav classes in DA. Prof. Simpkins is so understanding and helpful. His essays and tests are NOT hard if you study! This is what a true college class should be like. If you come to class and take notes, you'll be set for the tests and essays. Great teacher, I def recommend his class if you're passionate about learning.

You cant possibly listen to him lecture as you're taking a tremendous amount of notes, refuses to give lect. slides. Tests are alright as long as you know the info. He should let people have access to slides to so you can pay attention to him lecturing during class. would not reccomend him.

He talks a lot and has you take twice as many notes. His essays are a bit confusing and he is a hard grader. Exams are worse then the essays. Sorry to the people that like him but not a fan of this teacher, and the majority of my class aren't fans either.

I have a 3.9 after 80 units in deanza and I still found this class challenging and confusing. A lot of information, some of which is superfluous and thrown at you in a rate too quick to consume. All assignments and tests are essays, takes over a month to get them back. A is doable but you have to attend and work hard at deciphering his lectures.

Very amazing prof. Took this course in summer school and didn't feel rushed at all, even with all the info packed into six weeks. He was very clear about the information and was always able to answer questions in great detail. He gives you all the information you need for the essays on the tests, no guess work required if you just show up and pay attention.

Difficult at first due to intense note taking and lectures. Movies were relaxing days but were quickly followed by many, many essays that made up your grade. He is very helpful in helping his students pass and is quick to reply to emails for help. Participation in class lectures is a biggie too. Overall good teacher.

Really good teacher. If you want to do well in his class, attend every day because every class is very important. There is a powerpoint lecture every day, apart from watching 3-4 films. Take lots of notes and make sure to use lecture, film, and reading as references in your essays. It is easy to get an A if you follow his directions. hes very clear

I have to admit that this is how every college course should be set up. But the lazy student in me says there were a few too many essays. These essays served as the exams and aside from them, not too much work at all, but the way in which they were assigned made it a little more stressful than it would otherwise be. Overall, can't complain.

Mr. Simpkins is a great person/ instructor. He gives quick responses to emails and is very helpful. He almost pleads for you ask him for help. His class was giving lectures/ films/reading; tons of writing and reading-but easy- it's open book exams and he lets you know what he is looking for. 4 exams in essay format. Loved taking his class.

Awesome teacher. He knows his stuff, speaks very clearly, welcomes questions, and his lectures are easy to follow yet in depth. The reading can get pretty heavy, but just take it in moderation. The tests and in-class essays are open note. Every lecture is vital to passing the tests, so make sure you attend each class!
