I am not sure who would ever think this lady is nice. She honestly made me feel horrible about myself and stupid. Even when I went to the board on her they said everyone fails her class so there was literally no hope. It's freshman sem. like my nursing classes were easy compared to this class and that's sad. DON'T TAKE HER.

Comment:

The mid-term was on the VERY DETAILED introduction and appendix to the textbook. She feels students won't do the reading if she reviews or discusses the material. In that case, weekly quizzes or homework questions would have helped everyone prepare for mid-term. My advice is to attend, take careful notes, and participate in the discussions!

By far my favorite professor at SHU. She pushes you to do your best and doesn't let you slack off. I learned the most from her out of any professor. She gave great feedback on every paper and gave detailed explanations of what she wanted to see if you met with her after. Amazing teacher!

Worst professor I have ever had. She was a very hard grader and expects freshman to write at a senior level. You have to write 4 papers, which are all graded harshly, and have to do two oral presentations. DO NOT take her as a teacher. You will regret it if you do.

my god do i love professor staples. such an innovative educator. i had her 40 years ago. she was such a tough professor. Thoroughly had intercourse with my mind. Seriously, challenged my self concepts. made me feel like i had a disability. Why wouldnt you pass me......I worked so hard.

THIS WOMAN IS A GPA KILLER AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I EARNED ALL A's FROM EVERY OTHER PROFESSOR IN THE DEPARTMENT, HECK THE UNIVERSITY! YET SOMEHOW FOR HER CLASS MY WORK DROPS TO "C" LEVEL! furthermore she requites meetings before accepting any paper and her office housr are VERY limited. On top of that I went to one and she forgot she had met with me!

I would not take her as a teacher ever again. She is very funny and knows what she is talking about, but she does not give help and allow you to improve. Do not take her. Love her as a person but her grading is outrageous.

I strongly suggest that if you have Dr. Staples you immediately switch out of the class. I am an A student and this class was the hardest B+ I have ever earned. Professor that strongly agrees in one teaching themselves. I went to two CLA's for one paper both said it was a remarkable paper and she gave me a B- no rubrics on how she grade.

Absolutely love the woman, that being said, it was the most difficult C that I've ever gotten. For my first paper if it were graded by any other professor woud have been an A, she gave me a D. Yet I am happy I took her because I can currently write A LOT better. As a freshman I would not reccomend taking her course, but upper class-men take her!

Dr. Staples is a very intelligent women and she does not let you forget it. She will spend a majority of class talking about a subject totally irrelevant to what you read or are supposed to be learning. I dont think she has much of a life outside of her teaching aside from her thousdands of pets. She will make you feel dumb during her lectures also

I had Ms. Staples in 1970. One of the most difficult professors ever. Should be teaching at Yale. And that is exactly why I adored her. Back then SHU did not have many GREAT teachers but she was the best. The most difficult B I ever earned.

Staples was actually a great professor in my opinion. She is extremely smart and knows a lot about Brit lit. I found her very helpful and also very fair. Absolutely loves participation so do it and get on her good side. She is very hard and demands a lot from her students but thats what makes you a better english major. PARTICIPATE and READ!

Literally the most condescending teacher I know. She is a great person outside of the classroom, but inside she will make you want to pull your hair out. Over 3,000 pages of reading. Good luck trying to have fluid notes in this class. I had to make a "key" for my notes (NR- Not Relevant, OT- Off Topic) English majors can't avoid her. Sorry!

Dr. Staples is the best prof I've had at SHU. She's tough, but that's what makes you learn. You have to really earn the grades on your papers--she's hard, but she's fair. She's also really helpful with planning your paper. And her lectures are entertaining and educational. She's a really great professor.

I had Dr. Staples for English 39 years ago when she was a rookie teacher. Interesting to see that things have not changed. She expects a lot, did not inflate grades and if you kept an open mind you learned something from her. I loved her class.

I can't deny that she knows what she's talking about, but she's terrible at teaching it. She's unclear with lectures, picks favorites, gives failing grades because she can, and is on a serious power trip. She is extremely self absorbed & looks down on all of her collegues & students which is very unprofessional. Go to Fairfield U for the credits.

I took shakespeare with Staples and looking back SHE WAS THE WORST PROFESSOR I HAVE EVER HAD. Learning about Shakespeare is supposed to be work but she does not facilitate anything. She purposely doesn't tell you what is going to be on the exams, guides you in the wrong direction and then fails you. I never slept while taking this class.

Yes,she is a tough grader.But that is what made her so awesome.You worked hard & she expected it.I learned so much from her & would recommend her classes or seminars to anyone interested in going beyond the norm & what is merely expected.
