Likes the sound of his own voice. Not allowed to think for yourself in the class. Glad no one else has to take this class because he's leaving Oberlin

Roger really knows theater and his course was very useful to me. He has become the target of some student self-drama (he is a prof, not a mental health care professional), and has weathered the storm. I recommend his to students who want to learn.

This teacher is consistently behind, despite having taught this course for decades. He is bad at answering questions, and if you try to think for yourself, he will mark you down for it. Sadly, he will also mark you down if you parrot back what he says. If you're not a theater majorminor, don't take any courses with him. Bring a friend to history.

While attendance is mandatory, paying attention isn't - in fact, you get worse grades. What you do have to do is go to study sessions. The TAs teach you a semester in a couple hours. Roger Copeland has had several complaints on his behavior, some even from visitors. Tenure is the only reason he's still here - ask the department!

The class was required for my major, other wise I would never have taken it. His lectures are out of date & spoken so monotonously it can put someone to sleep, he only teaches his views and refuses to listen, his TA's do all the actual teaching in review sessions trying to get students to pass. Bad w trigger warnings & understanding mental health.

Roger is a genuinely caring human and has some interesting and innovative ideas regarding theatre. He is one of the smartest professors I've met. I think Western is an incredibly helpful class and he is very clear and informative. If you listen to him, you'll learn a lot. It doesnt just apply to theater but also history, politics, and literature.

Roger Copeland is my academic advisor and is genuinely interested about my well-being, personally and academically. He is very helpful with choosing classes and is overall a very funny and incredibly interesting person. His theatrical ideas are inspiring, but Western is not the best class in the world but is definitely tolerable.

Enjoy him outside of class, but Western Theater was a chore. Did not inspire an interest in the subject where there's a wealth of information to be learned. Tests were hard if you can't regurgitate back information. Curriculum and movie clips are outdated and need to be seriously edited.

A pompous egotistical encyclopedia who's wealth of knowledge can be very useful, but who offers as little true intelligence as he is interesting in receiving from his students.

I hate Roger Copeland. He is only interested in seeming. He kisses major rump if you have even the slightest bit of fame. He makes horrible noises if you start to answer a question in a way he doesn't agree with. He makes passes at his female students. He is all together a rotten person. The only fond memories I have of R. Copeland are the hysterical impressions that myself and my classmates often did (and still do!) of him. He is a pompous, self-important, brown-nosing, ****ous old man.

We had our differences of opinion, but it often made for healthy and interesting debate. He was very knowledgeable of the subject matter. He promoted and ignited discussion in the classroom.

The class is interesting, but he definitely only teaches his opinion, not the material, and then tests on it. Just regurgitate. And be on time, he gets cranky if you aren't.

There is no room for students to develop their own opinions in Copeland's classroom. As said below, he teaches his opinions as if they were fact.

Have a cup of coffee before going to History of Western Theatre. Woe to you if you're not as awake as he is. (Personally, I think the man should not teach before 2:00pm. it's just too much for my system.)

A great, very animated lecturer. Uses lots of audiovisual materials really creatively, and is really helpful outside of class, but I have to agree with the person who says he tends to test on his own opinions.
