I was a photo major. His class was recommended by some graphics friends. I remember saying to someone "he contradicts himself". The friend said, "all great thinkers contradict themselves!" Roland is a GREAT THINKER. I try everyday to think about what I learned in his classes - that's 2 I took. The bad reviews here show that he's a great thinker!

How Design Magazine published that Roland forced his entire class of students to eat grass. Roland use to state you have to be effed up to be a great artist. Stanford University did a study stating artists display behavior similar to bipolar disorder. These are facts, and in the words of Roland, can you deal with it!?

I now teach, and my class is basically a complete copy of Roland's class. I'm dealing with community college students, so I hold back on the insults and try to be more encouraging. I figure that if they want to go further, they can step-up and dig deeper then. I try to instill a sense of visual language first taught to me by Roland.

A guy who opens the mind and shows everyone how simple design can be if they'd just let it be so. The fact that ACCD parted ways with Roland over the mooning of his class instead of his unprofessional advances towards hot female students actually says more about Art Center than Roland. I loved Roland. But I was not one of his female students.

Roland says words that sound like truck and witch a lot. What happened to common etiquette? I don't think you should degrade yourself to the level of the 'kids' you're teaching. I think Roland is a product of the 70's, and personally, I found the chaos of the 70's menacing.

By far the best teacher I have ever had. He will make you a better designer and without question is a vital teacher to take. As good as you think you are, he will push you until you have reached depths that you did not think or know you had. The ad-world would be a better place if more people PAYED ATTENTION to what he is saying. Take this class.

Though he takes a lighter approach on film students, he was a son of a b*tch. Which is a good thing. It's why I went to art center. He will discipline you and open your eyes to where you really stand. Most people have their heads up their arses until they take roland. Must take him while he's still alive. Man is he bitter...

COMM DES 1 with Roland is a good class for everyone. He's a grump. He's tempermental, moody & most of the time has great feedback on our work. If you don't have thick skin before going to this class, you will when it's through. Don't be absent. Dont' be late and always do your work. Dealing with him is very much part of the Art Center experience

His teaching methods are extremely strange, and somehow all tie in at the end amazingly well. You do get over his ****y attitude and it stops affecting you, first termers dont get intimidated, and graphic design is fun its not the hell he really makes it out to be, its cuz he's an ad guy and a bit bitter towards life, Pittty party for him.

I took all of six classes with roland and not by choice. the dude is great the first and perhaps second time around but try dodging him after that. he can get you into the mindset but he's not the one to look for when it's specific direction you need.

Genius. If you want a life-changing experience that'll dramatically change the way you view and make design, you MUST take him. I highly recommend taking his classes regardless of your major. It's gonna be a tough exp, but he's quite possibly the only teacher that's worth more than the ridiculous amount of money you pay for tuition. :)
