This professor dont even care about the code just needs the perfect words to explain the code . Dont ever take the class where he is teaching. He does not grade the students based on how you wrote the code .

Comment:

Sadly this course took a bad turn, Abbott's first time teaching rackett was completly horrible. Gave alot of assignments for a 2 units course, expected code to be up to his standards, turned in code doesnt count unless you get it look at by him or TA for points. Language was interesting but the class was a Mess,People were having trouble with labs.

Comment:

The thing about Abbott is that he was giving way too much homework(labs) for a 2 unit class. I would say he gave out 8 unit worth of homework. No joke. Just ask anyone who took him this quarter. The grading was a huge mess too, it was quizzes only and then changed to lab only for grades. Although I passed, he was just too much hassle and work.

Felt like the workload for this class was too much for a 2 unit course. Changed the lab assignment requirements and the grading system a lot (confusing grading criteria). This course felt too demanding, had to use most of my studying hours for this course instead of my other 2+ unit classes. Overall, he wants you to learn which is a positive.

Comment:

Prepare to lose a few hours of sleep unless you programmed before. This is one of the classes where you have to work with your time outside class rather than listen to the lectures and then ace the exam. However the professor provides some exercises and answers not normally found by reading in a textbook.

Horrible professor. Doesn't teach at all and solely relies on online videos that you can watch with out the class. Then tests you on things never mentioned or practiced on the videos. You'll learn the fundamentals of java and he expect so much of you. Avoid if possible pick another professor unless you go into the class with good knowledge of java

Worst professor I ever had. all he likes to do is have students do presentations and sit there and make fun of them and make them look stupid. Which is not a class act at all...he is easy to pass though, but I didn't like the way he treats his students, especially foreign students.

Here's the thing about Dr. Abbott: He is a really good teacher and he really cares. He want to see you try, and not just some half-assed effort. If you give an honest attempt to do the homework, he will give you full credit, even if it's completely wrong. You've got to put in the effort, so don't complain about the teacher when YOU fail.

This class didn't have a syllabus. Often times, students lacked directions. Professor changed teaching methodology every now and them. Homeworks was always due in 1 week; Most of the homeworks were challenging so students hardly turned them in on time. Class size dimished by 75% in the 4th week. Avoid this instructor at all cost.

Avoid if possible. Last quarter was Haskell now its Scala. He teaches the class with the assumption we will watch the 3 hour video of his lecture again. Relies on students presenting their homework which is utterly useless. Never answers directly. Doesn't curve, midterm+final is everything. Book won't help you, instead you need "logic". GoToCS wiki

Challenges you to think about what you're doing and what you're learning. Memorizing and parroting back information will get you nowhere. Topics can be difficult to understand initially, but hang in there. He grades you on your effort and your ability to share what you've learned including the process you went through.

I agree that he seems a bit condescending. However he is a good teacher, and pretty easy on the grading. Some of the assignments were very difficult, but as long as you give it a good effort and explain your difficulties coming up with a solution, you'll do well. His grading style is unconventional, no tests just a couple "interviews".
