Comment:

Dr. Philyaw is one of the most caring professors in the department. Some of the reviews on here nearly made me drop the course, but I implore you to give him a chance. The trickiest part about this class were the online quizzes. Do the readings, participate, and visit office hours and you'll be fine.

This class was pretty difficult, he doesn't show any powerpoints or an visuals so you must pay attention to his lectures. He goes on and off topic during the lectures which makes it really hard to pay attention. He also is a tough grader with little feedback. YOU MUST PARTICIPATE. I love history but this class was hard.

He doesn't have a clear grading system, nor does he teach on the subjects he asks us to read. We haven't covered anything in the textbook but have read more than any other class. As someone else said, this class is more of a philosophy class than a history class. I would not recommend this teacher.

Dr. Philyaw is an awesome professor. His NC History class was one of my favorites. He lectures a lot, but there are many opportunities for class discussion during his lectures, which made it less boring. He really knows his stuff when it comes to NC History. Overall, smart man and great teacher.

Had him for seminar and Public History. He is extremely intelligent in many areas, gives clear lectures and discussion. By far my favorite professor at WCU. Very helpful outside of class. He is a fair grader, do the work and do it well he can tell b.s.

Please dont have a different opinion than him. He will hold it against you in all reports. His high opinion of himself and his views only undermine the actual intent of the class. I took him twice, shame on me. History has happened, no need to re write it.

Not Philyaw's subject area but he does a great job. Yes a lot of group assignments that perhaps do not have the most useful applications. He puts interesting new spins on the topic. His desires for papers are unclear until you get one back. His exams are fair. Helpful outside of class too.

He is very difficult. Everything must be done exaclty as he wants, the only problem is you don't know what he wants until your work is already graded. He takes great offense when you ask him about grades. He is very political,and openly shares his views. You do learn a lot from him however.
