Comment:

2005 alumni here; Brooks has solid investment insights. The more you bring to the table the more knowledge he will bounce back at you. Here are some valuable lessons that I learned from Brooks; 1) the stock market as a whole is smarter than you, 2) when choosing a mutual fund go with low fees, 3) invest in your local community for better returns.

I really dreaded this class going in and it ended up being one of my faves. I struggled at first but realized that had I trusted where Dr. M was going with the assignments things would have made sense to me earlier. He truly wants you to understand so if you don't, ask him. He is more than willing to help.

Comment:

This was a very interesting class. Dr. Marshall helped introduce the topic of finance through relevant material (e.g. mortgages) and I enjoyed it more than I expected. I'm not a fan of Elluminate or needing to view the sessions that Dr. Marshall would tape on a variety of topics, but he was extremely helpful, very responsive, and a great teacher.

Comment:

Anyone who didn't have a good experience in this class didn't do the work. He sets you up to succeed if you're willing to do the reading and the problems. Beyond that he is such a nice man and if you take the time to get to know him he will remember you and give you credit for it.

Best masters class I have taken thus far. Dr. Marshall is great, and it is obvious he loves the topic and loves to teach it. The topics are completely relevant for all levels of interest. He cared about the students and did all he could to help us succeed.

FIN 488 and FIN 362: Marshall is probably one of the worst teachers in the college of business who teaches at a 300 and 400 level. He does not teach you anything...he expects you to know everything in the entire field of finance. Not to mention his assignments are extremely unclear and does not post directions/requirements for the assignments.

THIS IS A 300 LEVEL COURSE, NOT A MASTERS COURSE! the guy goes way too far in this stuff, and most of it is stupid analytical work that we will never use in the future. and he loves to yell at the class in emails. continue to play advocate to teachers pet, and continue to be awful at teaching the material.

Prof Marshall is tired of teaching. 5 weeks left in the semester and we have had maybe 3 lectures by him. He always has a guest speaker or a movie or a quiz. Haven't learned any thing and his quizzes are on random topics that he tells you about in a post on blackboard a few days before it. Class is simple but I dont know about my grade.

Definitely take this class as a finance elective, it's the easiest one. Mostly the class is all group work. It gets annoying bc Brooks will assign stuff 3 days before its due. Other then that the class isn't too bad, I got a B+ and just got done what I needed to and put no additional effort in. It can be a pain at times, but good class for seniors.

Comm Banking is useless so don't take it if you don't have to.As nice as Marshall is, his lectures/assignments/projects and tests are never clear.He assigns the same (grp)work over and over again with no clear grading scale.He likes you to think atten is mandatory bt it isn't.Wastes more time playing the "name game" thn teaching.Tke another class!

The most worthless teacher i've had at JMU. Teaches entirely using pre-made excel sheets with excel formulas, so unless you come in an expert on finance, don't expect him to teach you. Office hours are worthless too. Puts stuff on test you've never seen before. nice guy though.

2 exams, 2 group projects, and 1 final 10-15 page paper with your group. Exams are easy, but dont count on getting an A. He's a tough grader when it comes to grading projects which accounts for 30% of your final grade. Not clear on what he wants on the projects at all. Overall, i love Dr. Marshall...he's a really funny, nice guy!

brooks is a really nice guy, but his tests are just way too hard. I thought i understood the concepts well (doing well on quizzes), then i got a d on the 1st test. i ended up with a c- in the class, he's cool, but unfortunately grades tough.
