Comment:

There are only a few grades: midterm, final, research paper and online HW. The online homework is a guaranteed 100 if you do it though. The tests are easy to cram for IF YOU ARE GOOD AT ESSAYS. He is a great professor though. I did almost snooze during some lectures. I'd recommend him to any UAH student needing a history credit!

The tests are all essays and he gives you the possible prompts before the test. There are a few definition on the tests too for 10% of the grade. If you prepare for the tests then it's an easy A. I stayed half awake through the lectures. Highly recommended A+ if you can wing an essay under pressure. His research paper is a paper. Will help you.

Comment:

Took Modern America two semester's ago,and Dr Waring's effect on my development as a student has induced me to proclaim him one of the best at UAH. Excellent material selection, superb analytic discussion, and an awesome final exam approach. Learned the most about writing skills from him and he has earned my lifelong respect. Wonderful professor!

Great teacher. My only compliant is his test. They are too long and you barely have time to complete them if you write a lot. My advice is if you take him, during test time summarize as best as you can.

Really nice guy. Memorizes your name, which is pretty cool. Lecture style off of Powerpoint but you need to listen to what he's saying. Tests aren't so bad if you study and read the material - I thought I did horribly on mine but I ended up getting a B! I'd reccommend Dr. Waring - he def knows what he's talking about.

Dr. Waring is very good and makes his lectures very clear. However, you will have to read certain sections in the textbook in order to be ready for the tests. The tests were made up of an essay, short answer, and FITB, MC, or matching. It is impossible to do the research paper in one night, so don't try. Overall: good but mildly difficult.

I would rate Dr.W in the top 10% of professors at UAH. He can actually relate to students, which is more than most all professors can say. If you communicate with him about topics or ask questions, he seems to care more about you, which is good in overall grading.

Dr. Waring has a great sense of humor and keeps the class interesting. Tests are all essay of which he gives you general possible topics for which to prepare. Being all essay the tests are a little tough. Also there was a research paper and a couple of books to read. You will have to work to make the grade in this class but he makes it enjoyable.

Excellent teacher :) History is my worst subject and I had to put a lot of extra time into learning material. That's just the nature of this History course. He has an awesome sense of humor and keeps me from falling asleep in class. The exams require an essay which he gives 2 topics and you choose 1 to write on. I recommend Dr. Waring!

I loved Dr. Waring! I'm not a History person at all! I didn't want to take it, but it's required. I went in with not interest at all but enjoyed this class immensely! Exams are difficult but he tells you exactly what to expect. Take good notes...best advice I can give. I WOULD DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS PROFESSOR!

Dr. Waring was the best professor I've ever had. He made the class extremely interesting--he went out of his way to tell humorous side stories about historical figures and events. He had me hooked when he said he thought beer was a major reason that civilization exists and had strong evidence to back it up. Read the "sources" for the test.

Dr. Waring is an awesome professor! He is very helpful and you can tell he really wants students to learn and be successful. His tests are challenging because the majority of your grade is an essay, but go to class and read the sections he assigns in class and you should do fine. I would definitely recommend him. :)
