Had him for three separate courses, one in German. Consistent throughout, wonderful teacher, speaks to you as an equal, open about both disagreements and agreements... Topics presented and discussed in class are substantial and sometimes rather heavy, always rewarding, and the readings are, in a word, fantastic. Take a class with him if you can.

what a good man. i had him as a freshman and a senior. his text selections are really superb. he's smart and speaks to you like a colleague, so a lot is accomplished in class discussions.

... not a huge fan of Dowden's teaching.. took a very disapointing class with him once, and he seemed more into bashing philosophers than teaching them. But I will say that his classes can be one of the easiest A's you'll ever make at Brandeis, especially if you are a girl. If you are a BS artist, all the better. Sorry D, but it's true.

don't ask him for a recommendation even if you think he likes you. i thought he really liked me, asked him for a rec for grad school, and. had a hell of a time getting into grad school. when i finally got in, i looked at his rec and understood why. i was really taken back and felt somewhat deceived

He expects a lot from the class discussions, which makes them good. Do the reading ahead of time. He's a really easy grader, though, so you don't have to worry much about the papers if you pay attention and do a halfway decent job of explaining yourself.
