I graduated in '00. I took three courses with him, and they changed me. He was so intelligent and knowledgeable that simply disagreeing with him meant you were wrong, and he'd prove it. I'm a high school teacher now. I spend my days trying to be Stephen Whitfield, and it's impossible. He helped me make sense of the world. If I have a hero, it's him

AMAZING PROFESSOR! I want to major in Whitfield. Never uses notes and can talk about the subject matter and use quotes without referencing anything. Definitely not an easy course but if you speak up in class, do the readings and pay attention and take good notes you will succeed and enjoy!

Although attendance isn't mandatory, you actually want to go to his classes because he legitimately cares about his students and you feel like you let him down if you don't attend. He's not an easy grader but fair and he really pushes you to push yourself.

THE BEST! Combines all the best parts of my other favorites. The compassion of Gordie Fellman, as interesting as Cohen, and the encyclopedic knowledge of Doherty. Best lecturer I've had, I'm disappointed I only took two courses with him.
