Steve is a nice guy who does want to help as long as you ask questions. There are a lot of long lectures so be sure to ask anything thats confusing. But, hes a really slow grader, so you might be irritated with that. Also, be sure to read the book and take good notes as that will really aid you on the tests. Overall - not bad, for in-class.

Took the online class of surgery of geology. Worst decision of my life. Instructions are NEVER clear. Only posts grades 2x through the entire quarter. Tests are tough. Must participate heavily in online group discussion which is more difficult than it sounds. I dont recommend taking a class with professor Grupp.

The whole class is only group projects. No independent projects. Yes online group projects. No one ever helps or on at the same time. You lose points for having certain conversations with group suchas asking how everyone is doing. He never answers emails. Very stressful. The projects are really hard. If you hate group projects dont take this class.

Test questions are worded horrendously, his slides contradict the book, and he bases the tests off the book. Avoid at all costs. Average test percentages 64, 62, 62. Does not curve. I worked my ass off and still didn't get an A.

Nice guy, genuinely tries to help but only after he makes sure you're actually struggling. consistently unclear and unreliable about grading, due dates, and is constantly changing the syllabus. never knew what date the 3 exams (open note, 50-70 questions, multiple choice and vague) were to be taken, changed literally last minute multiple times.

If you're the type of student that checks their grade online, you'll be a bit irritated with Grupp. He's not the kind of teacher that posts grades regularly. But he is a fun teacher, and you're likely to enjoy the class.

Comment:
This course is the most frustrating due to incompetence on the professors part of a poorly constructed online class. The format is hectic, with vague weekly instructions that are located in two different modules. The midterms are only allowed to be taken within 24 hrs, the professor doesn't give feedback on grades, and grades very slowly.

I took Grupp's class online. He's not very accessible offline/online, and his online format is a massive headache. I'd attempted numerous times to contact him, and he failed to email back. You don't know your grade or general progress most times, and it's quite unclear on what you're supposed to do. I strongly advise not to take his online course.

There is no explanation on when assignments are due, and he never gives an explanation for the grade he gives. He doesn't teach the class, you are given 3 paragraphs of vague explanation at the beginning of the week. Don't take this class.

Provides little to no explanation for when assignments are due, no clear guidelines, I was personally left confused throughout most of the course. He's a nit picky grader. He will make an assignment due on Sunday, but in the description of the assignment will say it's due a different day, so you don't even know you need to do it till it's too late!

He literally docks you points on assignments that seem to meet all of the criteria he asked for with no explanation why, and when I tried to reach out and ask for an explanation, my emails and calls were left unanswered. The whole setup of the class is extremely confusing, and I've taken many online classes before. Would not recommend.

Took an online class, was structured into groups so your grade is reliant on others work. didn't grade anything until the 4th to last week so we had no idea how well we were doing on the assignments. offers no extra credit. a good example of the worst kind of professor

The class is set up incredibly poorly - the entire class was confused the first week. It is almost entirely group projects, and if you're stuck with a bad group you're stuck with the work. He only grades twice a quarter, so you have to wait five weeks before you get any feedback. Poorly run online class. Frustrating groups.

Steve is a very nice guy who truly does care about his students. However, class/ lectures are extremely boring. Must rely on the book because he really doesn't teach from lecture(just tells random stories that don't relate to the subject at all.) field trip with the class was fun though in the beginning of the quarter and Exams are open notes!

He doesn't teach this class. You read the book and hope you get it. He sometimes responds to questions but don't rely on him. Tests are ridiculous and the grading is overly particular. Take a different science class.

Lecturespersonal diatribe-Assignments lack clear instruction-Response to ?s at prof leisure if at all-All discussion/lab grades are group dependent(pick group wisely or pick up slack & earn grades for slackers)-Grades posted weeks after due,& 1/2 not at all before end of qtr.-Requests to review are deniedarbitrary final grade-Awful way to learn!

Steve is a nice guy and has hilarious stories. However, he can get really boring with his lectures. He loves to see you in class, but everything he lectures on comes straight out of the book. The labs are time consuming and stupid. He's a wise old man that you really can't hate. Geology is dry by nature, but he interconnects and makes it relevant.

Grupp is very delayed in every sense of the word. Great guy who cares about his students but he's constantly behind when it comes to updating his students with clear and consice information for his course. I would try to find another educator.
