As others have said, he is not accessible outside of class and does not prepare engaging content. The majority of our classes were lectures that were accompanied by images that were not connected to the content. I don't recommend that you take any class that he teaches.

DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. Miller is the most ridiculous and conceited professor I've ever had. He does not respond to emails, is not accessible outside of class, and told me verbatim that his teaching style is the "best you can get at UConn, and it's a shame that I'm not doing well." He rambles through lecture & touts his own work as much as he can.

Comment:
Professor Miller was probably the most pompous and self-involved professors I have had. He is rude whenever someone asks a question, and doesn't hit on the point of his lectures. I understand he is well-published, but his teaching style is very preachy with hardly any substance. Would not recommend him as a professor.

Professor Miller gives good, in-depth discussions of the subject matter. However, it is essential to also keep up with the readings and study terminology.

HEJS 1103 is one of the most enlightening classes I've taken. Dr Miller not only teaches about the history and philosophy of Judaism (from both interior and exterior perspectives), but also trains his students in critical thinking that is invaluable in **EVERY** field of study. Listen in class, do the readings, and you will do great and *enjoy* it.

Class is interesting and professor is extremely knowledgeable, readings weren't that long for me (about 15-25 pages a week), however, attending class is essential, his exams are 75% (25 multiple choice questions) and 25% ( 2 essays), he also provides bonus questions up to 15 points as essays, go to lecture, read every now & then, and you get an A.

Professor Miller is incredibly knowledgeable and is really passionate about his subject. I found the lectures really interesting, but make sure you take notes. The tests were not too tough as long as you did most of the reading . The reading assignments were really long, but not all of it was on the exam. I'm not Jewish but it was manageable.

Lectures are pretty boring and can be unclear. Exams are difficult no matter how much you study. He promotes his own work and opinion a lot. Accidentally offensive. He assigns a lot of reading. The bible readings are interesting, but very long. Other readings do not seem to relate at times and are not as necessary as he makes them seem.

If you aren't willing to put aside time for readings, don't take. There is a lot of supplemental reading. His lectures are long, but I found them very interesting and he is engaging. Knows he's very knowledge and expects you to know his opinion. Don't need any prior knowledge about Judaism to take. Grade composed of only 2 exams and the final.

Professor is incredibly unfair in his teaching tactics and expects you to cover extreme amounts of reading over the course of the semester for an introductory course. Do not take especially if you have a tough schedule or you won't pass. Very monotone and boring. 3 tests make up your entire grade and they are incredibly difficult

Generally a captivating speaker, with a humorous, cynical edge--and one of those rare people who truly THINKS about every aspect of his subject. Lots of reading; do as much of it as you can, as it often comes up on exams, but the points he makes in his lectures are truly his own. All Jews--and anyone interested in Judaism--should take this class.

Professor was horrible! He ranted and mumbled for an hour and 15 minutes twice a week. He makes you want to fall asleep and then you are expected to know everything about Judaism on the 3 exams. The exams were hard and the only thing that made up your grade in the class. This class is frustrating and pointless! DO NOT TAKE.

Absolutely hated this class. Lectures were unclear and boring, sometimes assigned readings were over 40 pages long. Pretentious. Took every chance he got to talk about his own success.

Nice guy, has a unique sense of humor. Ask questions/contribute in class; he will help you out gradewise. I recommend going to his office hours periodically, making a connection, and showing a genuine interest in doing well. Go to lecture, he emphasizes key concepts that will be on exams. Easier class to understand if you're interested in religion.

He's brilliant about the subject matter, but goes off into tangents that can confuse the class. It's a lot of reading, but one of the books is pretty easy to follow along with. He's always willing to help with questions via e-mail or during class, but his lectures will make you fall asleep

Lectures generally aren't the most interesting things, but some sections could be - he tries to insert some jokes. Helpful when you e-mail questions. Tends to go off on tangents in lecture. Overall a good guy.

Get ahead in the readings early, because they get longer toward the end of the semester. Miller is great though. Lectures are interesting but can be hard to follow if you aren't 100% focused. Makes the subject interesting and even funny. Grade depends on three exams, not cumulative. Great class! Definitely recommended!

Miller was fun at times but at others incredibly boring and dry. Nodding off in class is pretty normal, and reading is a must as well as attending class. Without hearing his lectures, you won't know anything about what the test will be on. But, Jewish holidays you get off!
