I love taking Susan's discussion-based seminar classes. Yes, it's work to be taken seriously, but you learn a lot and enjoy it at the same time.

Susan is wonderful! She is a really tough grader though, so I would consider how invested a writer you are prior to taking a class with her. She is really eager to help students and clearly cares. She's also really hilarious and makes class enjoyable to attend.

Susan is hands-down my favorite professor at Carleton. She's so lovely and obviously cares for all of her students. She also has this manic energy that makes lectures really engaging. Her writing assignments make you rethink the way in which you compose essays, which is super valuable. A-traditional and great!

Comment:
Found Susan's Victorian Novel dissapointing. Lacked ability to guide a productive discussion: students veering into vague characterizations+"what if" plot points. When she did reign ppl in her ceaseless repetition of critical persp. (mostly cult. and deconst.) stifled thoughts to generality rather than producing nuanced wholes.OnlyProfIWon'tTake.

Susan is one of the few English profs who changed the way I looked at a text. There were plenty who taught me a lot about English. but Susan's Narative Theory Seminar changed how I read. She loves the work. She tells good stories. I never regreted a class i took with her.
