Comment:
Leinbaugh is brilliant and very quirky, and tries to engage with everybody during a class period. That said, his lectures are often very scattered and he does show off a little. You'll definitely learn /something/ good in his class, but it may not be what was originally on the syllabus. Easy class, just do the readings and throw your thoughts in.

Point blank my favorite professor at UNC. Dr. T is unbelievably intelligent - and easily the most accomplished person I have ever met. His classes are amazing; you learn things you simply wouldn't learn in any other class. What I love about Dr. T is that you don't have to love English to take his classes - he makes any and all topics exciting.

The best professor I've ever had at UNC. He is probably the single most accomplished person I have ever met and is remarkably inspiring. I would take every class with him if I could. He expects you to work hard but is very aware of those who give a solid effort and rewards them accordingly. You're missing out if you don't take his class.

Dr. T is the best! He has degrees from Yale, Oxford, and Harvard, and he's kind, funny, and extremely helpful. He is, quite simply, Carolina's gem: take a class with him to experience the finest education the university has to offer.

I'm torn with this prof. He is very knowledgeable and charismatic, but he comes off as a bit egotistical and irreverent. He's been knighted by the Queen of England, so that's cool, and he gives off Friday classes, which is nice. He's not too difficult but he makes sure to cover the most vulgar and crude parts of Chaucer, which I didn't appreciate.

Best professor I have had. He is extremely intelligent, caring, humorous, and you can just tell he loves what he does. He's so enthusiastic about his subject and encourages enthusiasm from the class. He will clarify anything in an instant and is always available to help.

Lectures were EXTREMELY scattered and difficult to follow. Class also moved very slowly - we read all of King Lear, for instance, but literally only ever discussed the first act. He can be fun, kind, and entertaining, but if you want to feel like you've learned something I would go for someone else.

The inauthenticity and self-involvement were offputting, as others mentioned. Strange he's elicited this high # of positive reviews. I talked to several others who took this class or one other course of his, and he's just not that hard to see through. I loved the texts we studied and felt a bit disheartened to encounter them under his "guidance."

The Man. Dr. T. is an astounding professor who wants you to enjoy the material. His readings are short and focused, which makes discussion and analysis a pleasure. Take him. He buys you cookies and hot chocolate on holidays. He loves Chaucer and Beowulf and masterfully describes and explains them. A joy to have.

I wasn't the only student in my class who was lukewarm about this professor. He seemed obsessed with showing off his cleverness, ultimately I guess in the interest of winning over students and getting good evals. I found the class medium-challenging but didn't appreciate the superficial, we-aim-to-please-the-customer teaching style.

Absolutely brilliant professor. I am a science major and have no interest in English but this professor is captivating and held my interest throughout the course. Seriously one of the best professors at Chapel Hill. You will hear many people praise Dr. Leinbaugh and none of this praise is overstated.

Overrated! He's knowledgeable enough about his subject but very affected and ultimately seems more concerned about his own ego than the students. You'll have no trouble in his class if you do the work (which is a lot). He definitely had favorites among the students. Being funny (but not that funny!) just seems to go with the ego-territory.

I am so glad that I got to take one of his classes before I graduate! He is an absolutely amazing teacher - profound, entertaining, engaging, and brilliant! He is incredibly knowledgeable and a fantastic teacher. The work load is fair, but he is very kind and understanding about due dates. Take one of his classes if at all possible!! Amazing!!
