I absolutely loved this class. While is very lecture-heavy and there are a lot of details to know, Stavrou is an amazing professor. He has a ton of stories and fun facts and I was delighted to go to class every morning. Going to his office hours is a must; not so much to ask questions, but to get to know better an amazing professor and person.

Dr. Stavrou oozes with passion for Russian history. He's incredibly knowledgeable in the field, and despite having taught this subject for the last 50+ years, his passion does not seem to be wavering. Syllabus and the final may seem overwhelming at first but if you visit his office hours he'll ease you into the course. To pass, attendance is a MUST

Professor Stavrou is a wonderful teacher, I so wish I had taken a class with him in my first year. He is one of the few men I've met who has a true passion and astounding depth of understanding of the subject he talks about. The only drawback is that he constantly recommends books you won't have time to read. I cannot recommend him enough!

Theo's lectures are captivating, intriguing, and incredibly helpful. The course involved several book which you read at your own pace, however, his lectures gave background and supplemented the readings. In order to do well on the 2 papers (the only grades in the course I might add) you need to attend lecture fairly regularly.

Professor Stavrou, eighty years young and full of knowledge. I have taken two of his classes and he definitely is a passionate scholar. His lecture style is just that, strictly lecture. He is also very humorous with how he uses analogies. He also appreciates office visits and is willing to help out with any problems you may have.

His lectures are all over the place; "You know how I like to speak in parentheses within parentheses." He really knows the material though because he's lived most of it. Loves it when student come to his office with questions or clarifications.

Professor Stavrou is a wonderful professor. He and his brother, Soterios teach modern Greek. They're both older men from Cyprus and they teach in the old British style, so it's a bit harder. He's full of great stories and is very helpful. I wish I could take some of his other classes!

He's very helpful and knows his stuff, but his lectures are a scrambled mess. Read the books on schedule, visit him as often as possible in his office and try to gain an interest for the material through the books. Otherwise this course will be VERY DIFFICULT for you.

His lectures are really hard to follow and I don't feel like I actually learned as much from him as I did from out assigned reading, but he is very willing to help students outside of class and even though the final was brutal, he grades very generously.

A very cute and sweet man, but not a great professor. Lectures were completely disorganized and impossible to follow, just Prof. Stavrou rambling for 3 hours nonstop. Final consisted of a list of 200 terms which he expected us to memorize but barely touched on in class. Made an extremely interesting topic seem really boring.

Wonderful Professor. A class act all the way. All professors should take lessons from this man. All semester he got to know all of us and everyone in the class loved him. He may have known too much about Russian hist, though. Hard to follow some of the men...they all seemed to be named Alexsei and Alexander. Great teacher!!!

Professor Stavrou is a wonderful man. He is truly passionate about his work and is an expert in Eastern Europe, Greece, and Orthodox History. However, his lectures can be hard to follow, and his course lacks organization. Office hours are a must, at least once a month is necessary. Take one of his courses before he retires! :)

He is very passionate about what he teaches and who he teaches, but also rather unorganized. Lectures tend to wander off on tangents a lot. No assigned weekly readings - you guide yourself. But he is always willing to help and is an interesting character to get to know. Make sure to visit him in his office at least once, it's quite an experience.

Comment:
Professor Stavrou lectures were torturous, he just threw out one name after the other and it was impossible to put them all into context. His final included both a written test and a take home portion and the study guide had almost 150 terms which were barely mentioned. I learned nothing from him because all he does is ramble.
