Comment:
A guy who I knew who was becoming an authority on a subject in lit taking his class, Tom failed him because he proved him wrong on something in class, I literally watch him torment a brilliant student out of university, and scream at another over the phone. AND THIS WAS JUST IN ONE CLASS. AVOID. Horrible teacher and human.

I took Canadian Thought and Culture with Gerry and although at first he may come off as a jerk, he is a great guy. He is willing to help even though it is intimidating to ask him. Not my greatest English mark, but definately the class where I learned the most about writing and literature. Gerry just doesn't take BS, so don't try it! Great!

very helpful, actually! both he and the TA were happy to meet with me on short notice. grades were fair. the TA was a bit more generous, but i never found dr. gerry an unfair marker either. lessons were disorganized but discussion was stress-free. no complaints! make sure you attend: it's worth a lot.

Reading over these comments, it becomes obvious that the ones critisizing how he is very critical with those who speak out in class were making stupid comments. I was in a class with him and he simply "crushes" those who have no idea what there saying. That just means you have to pay attentions and actually listen, BS won't work, its not highschool

This was my favorite teacher through my entire year at laurentian. I've read comments saying that he "Trashes" those who critisize his opinions. This is far from the truth as he just really requires you to back up your answers intelligently, and he usually has a response ready for obvious critisisms. Awsome class, very knowledgable teacher.

Some of the aforementioned criticisms of Dr. Gerry's courses do not take into account that he is clear on structuring most of his classes through seminar discussion from day 1. Keeping that in mind, he is engaging, funny, and a good moderator.

I will give the man some credit, he is intellegent and there were classes that were interesting. But watch it if you do not agree with him and vocalize it. He will make class harsh. Take his classes if you can kiss butt :)

This prof is an extremely hard marker but once you figure out his marking scheme, it gets easier. As long as you go to class, pay attention, and DO THE READINGS, the class is good. His essays have scattered due dates which are fine if you get them done early enough. He doesn't tell you what to think, he lets you do that for yourself!

He treated the class more like an upper-year course which was great. He is a hard marker, but if you get into the way he likes essays, he is great! As long as you participate, the class is fun.

Comment:
Claiming that a student lacks independent thought simply because a given professor happens to support his/her work strikes me as a rather large lapse in logic -- I don't see the correlation -- but fine: who needs logic, anyway? In keeping with the trend established by the previous comment, I will say nothing about the class itself.

One of L.U.'s worst -- in one night, 7 students dropped his course. He almost came to blows with one of his students over the issue of independent thought. Gerry even had the audacity to make a crude remark about one female student. This pompous bootlick should have been fired for this

if you are looking at this entry considering whether or not to take his class- don't do it. Seriously. You MIGHT learn something about thinking outside the box, but nothing else. It's not worth your time. He's just plain awful

Great teacher. Be aware, he expects to have your full attention in class. Average marker, let's not forget it is university! Be willing to learn and grow! Class discusions are often off topic, but his main goal is to get you thinking, not tell you what to think.

It would be much more helpful to learn what he wants to hear rather than the course material, because any difference of opinion will be met with smug dismissal. In an academic argument telling me that I "just need to accept" his point of view is not conducive to learning. Be prepared to give much more than is asked for if you want a decent mark.
