Worst professor I have ever had. Taking a Chemistry and Society class (thinking I would be learning about Chemistry's impact on society right? WRONG) and it's freshman level and it's terrible. He has to give a ten point curve on tests out of seventy just to keep a class average of 40/70. INEPT TEACHER

Everyone hates on him, but its college people. Wake up you have to work. He isn't that bad. You do have to put a fair amount of time into your work, but you will get a decent grade. There will be a curve at the end. Leave the guy alone.

Seemed like he'd spend a lot of time on stuff and not put it on the exam. Then put the stuff he spent very little time on them. Didn't start actually teaching well until the semester was almost over. Overall, not the easiest class, requires a decent amount of personal work to understand the material unless you've had a lot of the material before.

Ridiculous. Worst teacher I have ever taken. Cannot teach chemistry at all. I did very well in AP chemistry in high school, and now am struggling in his class, and study all the time. Cannot answer student's questions, and tests over material that he doesn't teach. No exam curve, and no partial credit on exams. STAY AWAY FROM HIM!

He's a very smart man, but he sucks at teaching. plain and simple. DO NOT take his class, whatever you do.. because chances are, you won't get above a C. I withdrew from his class because I was failing. I had a 103% in my chemistry class in high school. Avoid Tommy Sorrell at all costs!

Professor makes humorously sarcastic comments, but does not seem to have a lot of respect for the class he teaches. The tests are easy, mainly because he shows you how to do the calculations in class.

He could care less about you. His lectures were terrible, and his tests very difficult. The curve can be generous, but that is the ONLY positive thing about his class. Avoid him at all cost.

I BEG YOU ... DO NOT TAKE HIS ORGANIC CLASS! Take his class and you might as well write your will and commit a GPA suicide. Those of you going for MED/DENT/PHARM schools don't ruin your future. His tests are just out of nowhere, nothing like what he "so called" teaches in the class. Don't let vanity make you think you're different cuz YOU ARE NOT!

Don't take this guy, or you'll end up with C if you are lucky! He teaches very fast and later on when you take the test you will see questions you have never seen in either of his lectures nor his book! Averages for his tests are about 50-60 and he usually adds 10-15 points which helps you not to fail!(doesn't sound like "curving well" to me!).

pretty clear in lecture, but goes through really quickly. VERY dry, boring. but gets the job done. the tests are mostly application, but you dont have to take all the tests. curves well.

can't really judge having only taken the first test, BUT his book is amazing in my opinion, very thorough [at least for the first 4 chapters], he does smile, has a dry sense of humor, that sadly I find entertaining, so far it seems straight forward, I'm sure it will go downhill from here, but I'd recommend him.

sorrell would rather be in his lab than teaching undergrads, and he makes sure everyone knows it. tests are tough, but the curve is usually generous (at least 15 points for my class). his book is actually pretty good, esp. if you're into biochem. he gives some extra points for attendance, office hours visits, participation, etc. (~15 pts).

Going to class is pointless, he assumes you already know everything. So you basically learn everything from his book. Tests are too hard for their own good. He's not a generous curver either and would rather err on the side of failing everybody than handing out even a few A's...dirtbag.

He gives a good curve if there's a lot of less-fortunate, "study-less" students(who probably didn't try hard enough) like all the others that left really notes on him below. Summary: Great book, challenging but interesting class, don't go to lecture. B or A guaranteed if you keep up with your studies and go over rxns atleast an hour a night.

He assumes the whole class is a simple review for everyone and has very difficult explanations for even the most simple concept. His tests on the material are harder than they need to be.

Not too good. Full of himself, assumes you know things you probably don't, requires his OWN book for class, doesn't answer questions. Extremely difficult to deal with!

horrible teacher, horrible class, about 80% of the class gets a C, hard tests but i guess thats understandable for hard material. 8am class, he is very rude, never smiles, not helpful, curves exams but not too much. wrote his own book, so if you dont have to take the class then please dont.

This man could put you to sleep. He is not interesting in the least big. If you want your first D, take his class. If you want to succeed in chem 61 and actually learn something without wanting to pull your hair out...take it with Dr. Ashby...she is like a breath of fresh air.
