I also had him for comp 3 and adv. conducting. Discompassionate? I think not! He gave me so much encouragement in my writing and conducting. I'm still writing today, 12 years after taking his class. He had HUGE shoes to fill, taking Mity's place, and he has done so, ably and competently. A definite gem, and an asset to St. Olaf!

if not a total "bandie" he'd rather see you gone. dis-compassionate ah. after my year in his regime i have never played my clarinet again. i loved to play, he destroyed that. he should go deal with professionals, not young college students. he turned me away from music.

Never have I encountered such an expressive and passionate man. He is creative and extremely knowledgable about comp. techniques, having deep love for the wind ensemble and his players. i'd appreciate, though, if he taught more specific comp. techniques and styles vs. allowing complete freedom.
