Dr. Martin will challenge your writing skills. If you haven't been prepared to write a structured argument using pristine word choice and grammar, you will learn. He gives generous comments on essays. He is extremely knowledgable and passionate about his field, esp. Irish Lit. Not only that, but he cares about his students. Take his class!

Very traditional style of teaching. He lectures and you write down notes (goes off topic). Often very unimportant details are on tests and daily quizzes. We were required to read 250+ pages a week for undergrad course. Focuses on minor details instead if themes in books.

Not very clear about what he wants. Will tell you one thing when grading a paper but will completely contradict it next time. Annoying and boring. Nothing you write will ever be good enough for him, so don't even try.

I had Dr. Martin for my senior seminar, Ten Modern Poems. This was the first time this course was offered, and seriously, every English major should take it. Dr. Martin is knowledgeable, engaging, and very pleasant to be around. Poetry is not my strength, but the class discussions and assignments really drew me in. He is a superb professor.

Relies VERY heavily on assigned reading. Frequent quizzes necessitate attendance. Helpful, communicative professor. Only a few complaints based on personal preference where professors are concerned. Otherwise, a wonderful professor!

I took two classes with Dr. Martin last year and *loved* them both. It doesn't help that one of them included a trip to Ireland, but both of them were equally engaging and interesting, and I would love to take him again. Extremely intelligent and personable.

Flying in the face of the past 50 years of comp theory, he's a little too overzealous with his grading--mostly, I suspect, because he feels he stands alone in the fight against "grade inflation." Nice guy or not, Martin micromanages the learning experience.

Dr. Martin is quite possibly the most intelligent and articulate professor with whom I've taken a class. His paper grading is firm, but he is consistent. His graduate Irish Literature class was easily the most engaging class I've ever taken.

I've taken several courses with Dr. Martin and have loved every one. He's easy to approach and to get along with. Unlike many of his collegues, he won't take off for a difference of opinions. As long as you can support your argument, you win. He's not easy. He will make you think. He won't, however, object to your opinions.
