This is such a horrible class! Its guarenteed that you will be bored out of your mind. Dennis is a nice guy and definitely knows astronomy, but the man cannot teach. Labs are fun, but they do not make up for the lectures.

More of a****ty history class than a science class. He basically just mumbles for an hour about guys like Newton. Take Bio 101 instead, or any other class!

While the book he arranged for the course is more illuminating than the lectures, I found Dennis great. He's passionate and knowledgable about the subject and thinks there are certain concepts needed to be grasped like unit conversion, scale, and the theoretical nature of science. He doesn't expect everyone to get 100% of the test answers right.

Awful. Just Awful. DO NOT TAKE HIS CLASS. The man doesn't teach. He just tells pointless random stories and spends half the time trying to get organized. He does not curve the grades as he claims he will. Watch out.

I don't even know where to begin. He was always late by AT LEAST 10 minutes, he doesn't speak; he blubbers. The syllabus is SO unclear that he has to spend at least half an hour of every class explaining it. Going to lecture is a JOKE. The only time I learned anything was in lab (Ron Zissell was a fantastic lab instructor). Beware of this class!

He's like Charlie in Flowers for Algernon when he's really smart. He has so much to say but cant get it out. For us mere mortals he is completely incomprehensible, the lab techs are amazing though. I don't recommend this class because you never really find out what's expected of you, so it's hard to figure out how hard you should be working.

as everyone says, dennis is nice, but he is difficult to follow. he's also a fairly subjective/unclear grader. i normally turn to my textbooks to assist me, but dennis wrote his own (unedited) book. just be aware.

Very sweet man. No one has a clue where the class is going though or what we're supposed to be doing. I'm not a science person but this class is not difficult. If you study the homework problems and what he tells you to study, you should be fine. Labs aren't bad. Class might seem more organized if we had a real syllabus/schedule.

Took this class in 1988. Sounds like not much has changed. I liked Mr. Dennis tremendously but you will understand more if you've taken at least high-school Physics. The labs are fun-- you get to play with the telescope and look at the night sky, hey!

He has lots of random knowledge, but don't ever ask for a recommendation from him. 3 months later, he still hasn't sent it. Other than that, Astronomy is treated like an independant, you learn what you put into it...

Absolutely terrible. He's impossible to understand in lecture, unapproachable and unhelpful with homework, and an irritatingly hard grader. He has a basic assumption that everyone already knows everything, so he won't teach.
