Boring Lectures. He is not going to touch whiteboard in the entire semester. Slides are unclear and there are lots of homework and clumsy projects. You should avoid him if you want an interactive lecture.

The prof unnecessarily makes things hard by over complicating them. The same concepts could be easily explained in very few words altogether

The thing about him is that, he's very knowledgeable and one of the best researchers in his field, so he want you to study and do your homework on time, but if you dont follow him through the semester you'll fall quickly behind.

Meng is a little unfair about attendance, although besides losing points on your grade you'll actually fall behind very quickly. Homeworks are thorough and easily the best resource to study for tests and quizzes. Very knowledgeable and you WILL learn about many useful algorithms (and some boring ones you learned in 240)

Very difficult class. Attendance is mandatory and the lectures are boring. Exams are way too difficult and studying the lecture slides only gets you a basic understanding that doesn't help you for the test questions.

I did not enjoyed this course at all. I had a lot of interest in Web data management but on researching the internet I found the study material to be outdated and irrelevant. I also could not understand at many times the idea professor was trying to communicate. He spoke too fast. It was an ok course. I would not recommend it to my friend.

I loved programming on databases before the course. I was confused and felt that i had unlearned some of the good skills like design and normalization that i had taught myself. The professor's communication skills was not upto my expectation. He was fair in his grading but overall i found the class to be dull, boring and redundant.

Just reads from slides which contains vague and very simplistic examples. The assignments are hard and will leave you wondering if he even covered or went over it. Overall the class is useless, you don't learn in the lecture and can't do the assignments. None of the subjects apply to the real world except the 5 minutes of SQL he vaguely goes over.

I must say that I definately underestimated this class. Even though I put the work in from the start and spent a lot of time, the material became tricky and the exams were difficult. Overall, Meng will make you think a lot about databases and the way they work. Definately a worthwhile elective. Fair grader overall.

Very fair teacher. I went into the class thinking it would be a push over but he managed to challenge the class and made sure we understood both sql and how a database is structured. I definitly recommend him for anyone who is willing to work and to learn.

Good professor. Taught in a straightforward manner, and his tests were fair with the exception of a few questions on the final. He'll outright refuse to help you with homework in his office, but he's very responsive to discussion board questions and e-mails. I enjoyed the course and the projects were useful; I wouldn't mind having him again.

Terrible lecturer, even the most interested can't keep attention. Not very helpful. Tests are hard, the average on our final was 56 and it's not cause we're slackers. Took this class to learn SQL, didn't. Course needs to be completely reworked.

Unhelpful, boring, speaks unclearly (when 1st lecture started I thought that he is still speaking native language to his freinds), very closed. Reconsider BU if you are not Chinese and you want to get CS MS/PhD in Databases. Check the list of recent PhD that Meng supervised. Ratio is 2:1 Chinese/non-Chinese.
