Comment:
Wieland is the perfect example of the man who know's what he is talking about but does not lecture with adequate depth. This is largely due to the course itself being substantially larger in course material than any other class but regardless you much go in knowing that this class has the work load of 2 lectures plus a lab.

He is extremely funny and very involved. Feedback given after presentations were great and he is not a tough grader. Very relaxed class!!! I also had him for Animal Ecology and Vertebrate Zoology which I enjoyed as well and did well in.

Biology of Fishes starts out hard, but gets easier. Although Wieland has powerpoints for each lecture, they contain almost no information, so you have to write down pretty much everything he says. Nothing is off limits on the tests, as he'll ask for some very minute details. However, I enjoyed this class immensely and learned so much from him.

I had an 8am with him and he managed to keep everyone awake. He's a nice guy and he posts all of his powerpoints online. Don't underestimate his tests. Some of the questions were unfairly worded. The final isn't cumulative and is basically a regular test.

Wieland isn't the best lecturer but a really nice guy. Class attendance is not at all mandatory for 127 and you can teach yourself the material. But he's really nice and a fair grader.

His class is quite difficult but he is very willing to answer questions and help students. He doesn't WANT you to fail and will do what is needed to keep you on the right track if you just ask. I learned a lot and am glad I took Bio 122 with him.

Very tough - lecture attendance and good note-taking is a must. He's nit-picky about wording and definitions, but not impossibly so. Labs are fun and you get some field experience using different equipment and techniques.

Werner Wieland is an interesting professor. He's tough, doesn't curve, and doesn't take bull from anyone. He knows his stuff and will talk for hours about his passions. The class is tough though, he's the hardest gen bio professor but if you want to be pushed to know your stuff and actually learn you should take him.

was my advisor. I can tell by just his "ADVIsING" that he must have been a terrible teacher. He made me second guess myself and what I wanted to study in school (made me feel stupid) If I wrote an e-mail to him he was RUDE and unprofessional in the tone of the message and if i was lucky it would be at LEAST 1 sentence long. Needs to find a new job

Dr. Wieland is a very tough teacher, but is an awesome person. Is very easy to get along with in and outside of a class. Easy class if you pay attention and do homework. Material was easy, just sometimes explains it in different ways. If you need help though he is always willing. Strongly recommend this teacher

He does not understand what a survey course is and chooses to go to indepth lectures about subjects that should not be covered in an introductory course. His study guides are pointless and have little to do with what is one the test.Passing is impressive, your grade is made up of only 4 tests.Study guides often are not related to the test questions

I do NOT recommend Wieland if you're just taking biology for the GenEd requirement. He will get you utterly lost and there's a real chance you won't pass the class. His lectures are completely one-sided with NO interaction, If you ask a yes/no question you get a 10 minute long answer, and the only grades in the class are the tests and lab projects.

Dr. Wieland is one of those professors that knows so much about the topic, its impossible to separate the material you need to know and the stuff he threw into to lecture just as side notes. HARD lab practicals, barely got a B

Terrrrible class. We learned nothing that was useful or that could be taken away from the class. The tests were atrociously hard and basically required you to know every single word he'd ever said in class. If it was a useless piece of info it would be on the test - and the class average was usually a 60. AVOID AT ALL COSTS.

the classes were BORING + unorginized, the tests were 'learn to speak dr wieland', not 'learn ecology' but the final was so easy since it was a repeat of all the other tests. hes a stickler for definitions. once after a test the entire class argued a question... he didnt give us the pts though (when more than half the class agrees that something is wrong i think you should change it...)

Dr. Wieland is fun to be out in the field with and you gain a lot of experience. In the classroom he is incredibly DISorganized and takes 20 mins to answer you question and only ends up confusing you. Difficult grader, but not impossible. Teaches intere
