I just happened to come across this site for rating professors. I was actually just doing a general search to see if Prof. Tappen was still at SDMC. Like a couple others who posted, I had Prof. Tappen in 1981-82. Prof. Tappen was one of the best teachers I have ever had. After 36 years. I still reflect on my time in class. That says it all.

Tappan is the best lab teacher EVER! Cares u learn the material. Most of the lab professors skip over sections Professor all the skills you will need to work in the field. he is retiring so you will be luck to get him fall 2015. warning corrected labs look like a crime scene. reread and pay attentions to your mistakes. All lab skills are on tests.

I loved this professor - he was one of the best I've had at Mesa. His lectures before the lab were very thorough, he DID the experiment right in front of us before we were supposed to do it, and he was very patient when answering questions, given that you aren't rude (which i think is where any negative comments about him stem from). He's awesome

LOVE THIS GUY!! He very clearly explains what is expected, and grades accordingly. He has an abundance of patience, is very approachable, and does a great job explaining, in an understandable way. I feel lucky to have had him as a teacher.

Listen to his lectures, ask him questions, work in his class/lab, he taught me in 2000, he wrote me recommendations, I now have a BS in Applied Health and RT(R)certification. You have to find a new gear to pass, just don't stop.

I was really frustrated with Tappen at first because he can be a really picky grader. I put in a ton of effort in this class from beginning to end, and I got an A. If you want it, just put in the work. If you do the labs and questions correctly you can use them on the test which should guarantee a good grade on the tests as well. I recommend him.

He is a very difficult grader, picky. And he takes a long time to explain what's going to happen in lab (hours even). If you need that extra help it's great but if you wanna get out of class on time it's killer. All of my labs were two days or more. Every class something is due: questions, lab report. I switched professors because of him.

Chemistry is not an easy subject. It doesn't matter who teaches the class. However, Tappen takes the time to explain things step by step and is interested in the subject. He does grade rather harshly, so its up to you to figure out what he expects and deliver. If you can do that, you can easily get an A in the class.Just put in the required effort.

Tappen is one of the best prof's I have ever had. If you work hard, go to class, and work his practice problems you can difinitely get an A. Allows you to bring a cheat sheet to exams. 85% is an A. His exams are really difficult, multiple choice, you do get partial credit and must show all your work. Do hw and extra credit and you will be fine.

A VERY NICE GUY AND SURPISINGLY HAS A GREAT SENSE OF HUMOR. BUT BEWARE...WORK EXTREMELY HARD AND MOST DEFINITLY READ THE BOOK AND ATTEND ALL HIS LECTURES. HE DOES PROBLEMS IN HIS LECTURES AND PUTS SOME ON THE TESTS.

Awesome Professor! He is not a DEVIL as said before. I expected him to be based on that, and found him to be helpful, funny and a great teacher. Do your labs and you will be fine. Has very fair grade system, so you are sure to do well. If you do bad, you probably did not go to lab! I think he retired now but he still deserves an honorable mention.

Tappen rocks! Don't be lazy and do the work. 85% and above is an A. He is a fair grader and will make an effort to meet with you. If your not lazy you can get an A without sleepless nights. Turn in the HW for grade fense jump if needed. Other bad ratings are mainly from students who didn't read and do hw, its chem, what do you expect?

TAPPEN IS THE FREAKING DEVIL. he will rip you a new **** before the semester is over. NEVER EVER TAKE LAB WITH HIM. You do twice as much work as the other classes and get stuck with a lame grade. Chemistry sucks to begin with and its even worse when you have a super hard teacher teaching it.

Some of the material overlaps with Chem200 stuff. So if you didn't do well in the previous course, you may struggle a bit. Professor Tappen is an excellent teacher, although a difficult one! Do not let yourself fall behind the readings... and for those of you who think they will get an "A" without reading the book and doing practice #'s, good luck!

Tappen is crazy! I'm a chem major, and trust me, no way does anybody need to over emphasize on stupid things like sig figs and some other useless crap Tappen does. I'm an "A" student in Chem, I took other professors. But, one time I took Tappen, but droped the class when I saw what maniac he was. He should make a good drill instructor in the Army.

TAPPEN is a sick beast when it comes to chem. He really knows his stuff and should be called King Chem. Study hard because test are extremely hard. Test avg. where C's and it will take sicko's at chem to get an A in this class. If you like the challenge and really want to learn chem, take Tappen. BE WARNED,TAPPEN is not for the WEAK.
