Comment:
I took Hutton for advanced Greek. Although the class was quite frustrating at the time b/c of the amount of Greek he assigned, he is, in retrospect, a very good professor and is always willing to help his students outside of class. He has high expectations but ultimately it is worth it if you put in the work.

Professor Hutton was really nice, kind, and attentive to the class. The subject matter wasn't the best, but I enjoyed Professor Hutton himself. Only problem is the lectures are boring most of the time.

Prof Hutton is SO BORING. He's a nice guy, but really not a good prof for a 100-person class. He talks way too softly. in EVERY CLASS, at least 90% of the class was on facebook or something else. I took the class for the GER, but I don't recommend it. The exams are really hard. AVOID THIS CLASS.

Not that hard of a class, but incredibly boring. I found it ridiculously hard to stay awake in class or to even motivate myself to go to class. His exams are almost all from his lecture notes though, so you should go and try to take as much down as you can. Class is really boring, but overall not too difficult. Hutton is a real nice guy.

Prof. Hutton clearly knows what he is talking about and is very good at explaining some of the more complicated points of grammar. He is very strict about attendance, but has a good sense of humor.

There are times when class is great and times when it is boring, you really have to like the subject if you want to take this class. He's really smart and a little nerdy, so sometimes he'll give assignments that he thinks are fun, but that no one else does. He's not that hard though. If you like the subject, he's a good prof to have.

This class was the most informative Civ class I have taken, and Hutton teaches it excellently. I highly recommend any class with him- he's really funny, approachable, and his tests are easy as long as you study what he tells you.

Comment:
Greek Civ with Hutton is an absolute bore, as the lectures drone on and on with no end in sight. However, Hutton's style is much better in a smaller class, like LATN 490, where he's engaging and witty and truly helpful to his students. I'd say, only take Greek Civ if you have to/if you're willing to trade being bored for a fairly easy grade).

I've had many classes with Hutton, and I'd have to say that he's my favorite professor. He's highly interested in helping students learn and has a wicked sense of humor. Likes to recite Greek. Expects a lot from you, make sure you do the reading, but the tests are fair. Really attractive in a bookish "hot professor" sort of way.

Tons of reading material for the class. When the exams come around, you just never feel you can study it all. Ohh, and his "tons of extra credit." Yea there are a lot of opportunities to get EC but they all add up to maybe a 1% jump in your grade, so don't be confused by those comments. BORING lecturer. Interesting material though.

This class was not bad at all. Lots of assigned readings, most of which you can get away with skimming. So long as you can manage to stay awake for the lectures (which are interesting, but long) you will do fine.

Immense amount of reading for a lecture class (which I found you must actually do). Expect to spend the entire class notetaking as if your life depends on it. He does provide lots of extra credit opportunities, usually in the form of an extra paper. Lectures are clear and fairly interesting if you like the topic.

Good, clear lecturer who conveys all the information you need in the class period - could get away with doing very minimal reading. Class was pretty basic, but he still made it interesting with the occasional nerdy joke. Quizzes are easy if you go to class and skim the readings, tests are easy if you study, and offers TONS of extra credit chances.

This class was actually not bad. There were days I fell asleep... atleast once a week, but I like to stuff I learned. Even if you are not a classics major take this class. The teacher is nice and kind of funny. He really knows what he is talking about and its funny to hear him speak greek. I didnt like the quiz at the end of the week.

This man is a wonderful teacher and loves what he's doing. There is a fair amount of reading. There are weekly quizzes-- 5 Qs and only one is from the reading, so you don't have to scrutinize over it. He's not too picky on exams, but just about everything he covers will be on the exam. Going to class and paying attention is crucial. Extra credit!
