This class wasn't too bad. Pretty easy. Lots of reading. Some in class pop quizzes.4 discussion boards. A research assignment broken up into three parts, a midterm writing piece. 10 online quizzes based on the reading. Offers an extra quiz at the end to bring up your grades. Nice guy.

I enjoyed this class; he's witty and interesting. He designs the grading system in such a way that it is as low-stress as possible. No one assignment is make-or-break. Lots of small in-class quizzes. He's a generous grader of written work; most quizzes are online and pretty easy if you've done the reading (sometimes even if not).

Dr. William Nelles is a boss. He's an incredible human being, hilarious, and just super smart. He is obsessed with Jane Austen, super feminist, always sarcastic. I would definitely take him again - in fact I did. Amazing.

I took this online during winter intersession and that was the best decision ever! ENL 200 (microstories) A total of 3 discussions, two 500 word essays, 3 original microstores, and a final 500 word essay. He gave grades back within 1-2 days! Definitely worth taking over break! If you do the work ON TIME it's an easy A! Definitely a GPA booster!

Chaucer isn't easy in the first place but he expects us to be the best at it. He also expects a lot from you out side of class, and on mycourses almost daily.

Western Lit was an interesting class, and his commentary was both funny and helpful at the same time. There's a lot of reading, but Professor Nelles manages to make it fun. You need to keep up with reading though; he assigns discussion board assignments, a few papers, and in-class quizzes. Overall, he's a great guy and the class is an easy A.

Course is pretty easy!! Weekly readings totaling to 1000+ pages for the semester. Course makeup =10 quizzes online (on reading), random in class quizzes, 4 discussion boards, no midterm, 3-part final research paper (I thought I did horrible, but ended up with 90% on it), and a final which is 2 mini essays online. It seems a lot but it's pretty easy

Best English professor I've had so far. Such an intelligent guy, and so lax for a professor. Took "Chaucer" with him, and the assignments are easy. Definitely recommend him, just be aware of the 10 page research paper in his Chaucer class!

He is an amazing teacher. I took his class on Chaucer and I could not be happier. He gets really into the stories and has a lot of experience with manuscripts. Taking his class was seriously an eye-opening experience. Best class I ever took.

Dr. Nelles is great at responding to emails. He is also extremely lenient on grading. Java wouldn't work for me so he gave the whole class an A for the assignment. His class is a GPA booster, but theres a LOT of work. Midterm, final, and so many quizzes. Must like to read cause I do not and I struggled. Overall got an A-. not too shabby.

Very very very heavy on the reading. you need to stay on top of that. he gives a clear list of what's due, what to read, and a quiz online by the end of the week. the discussions are cake, and a huge grade boost. all you gotta do is show you read the material. class, he only goes over what you read, and sometimes gives in-class quizzes.

Everyone told me Nelles was great but I didn't have that experience with him. It may be because 311 was a brand new course. Wants class participation, doesn't allow it. It's his opinion or nothing. Paper was just "paint by numbers", oline quizzes were tough even with the reading. Reading level high. Ugh.

Dr. Nelles is one of the best professors I've come across at UMD. He's super funny and his classes seem to fly by. He assigns a TON of reading but as long as you do well on quizes you can pass easily.

Dr. Nelles is quite possibly the best professor here at UMD.He is definitely the best professor I have had thus far. I have never looked forward more to attending a class or enjoyed learning more. The 75 minutes flew by feeling much shorter than any of my 50 minute classes. If you have the chance to take a class with him, DO IT!
