I cannot express how much I feel that this man should no longer be professor at Fordham. He didn't give us his email or a coherent syllabus. Constantly told students different info about grading and essay topics; and wouldn't review conflicting interpretations of the readings to give better understanding. Worst Prof I had at Fordham.

Tanksley's an interesting man. He loves his subject matter and is really just looking for someone to talk with about his favorite books. His class isn't difficult. Read the books and you'll do well on quizzes/papers/exams. I don't know why everyone gets up in arms about him. He rambles, but it's interesting and relevant, though repetitive.

Comment:
Had Tanksley for Contemporary Fiction. He picks some of the best books I have ever read and in his choices reflects a certain kind of literary awareness. It's a shame that as a teacher he is terrible. Maybe he wasn't so crazy in his younger days (after all, he got tenure) but now he does nothing but ramble, only occasionally offering some insight.

I've never heard anyone rant quite like he does. It's irrelevant, arbitrary, and half the time it makes no sense whatsoever. Incredibly unhelpful and his grades come out of absolutely nowhere.

Comment:
Not only the worst professor I've had at Fordham, perhaps the worst educator I've ever had. Completely self-absorbed, with the class consisting of him ranting about things NOT related to the books, and a grading system which is completely and totally arbitrary. Do yourself a favor, avoid him at ALL costs.

Brilliant teacher, and expects coherence and insight from his students. Expect to do the readings (all amazing works). He rambles during lectures but welcomes heated discussion about controversial issues surrounding the novels. Don't expect to do well without some effort, he deducts for grammar on his papers and expects in-depth analysis.

I got a horrible final paper grade because I wrote counter to what he belived. It was worth almost half of my grade. I read all the books and it didn't matter. I don't know where his grades come from and after seeing how he treated students asking about their grades, I have no desire to ever see that man again.

He pulls grades seemingly out of a hat. He assigns one paper all year, not talked about until after it is graded and you stand perplexed at his flippant indifference towards any of your queries. God forbid you question him, he WILL demean you infront of other students, and WILL take it out on your final grade. It's a shame,he seemed like a nice guy

Smart man, good reading list. I Have been told its an easy class (don't know yet because he has given no real grades other than quizzes as of yet) Yeah to be honest, the man loves the sound of his own voice like a first born child.

insanely boring, but if you do your work you'll do well. you should assume you'll be tested on the reading, he loves pop quizzes. rambles a lot about nothing and gets off track. not the best class i've taken, but not the hardest

Refuses to discuss paper, pulls grades out a hat, no matter what your quiz average. Amazing booklist, however. A shame the literature never actually gets discussed. Class had potential to be real and worthwhile. I would avoid at all costs.

An altogether terrible person who truly should not be teaching in a university. He consistently goes on tangents that have nothing to do with the material. He doesn't leave comments on papers he grades and refuses to discuss them with you. Grades are seemingly pulled out a hat. Avoid at all costs.

He is a miserable man who spends the entire class rambling about nothing. You have no control over your grade becasue the final is worth so much and he gives you no info about it before. His grades come out of nowhere.

I was bored one day so I decided to sit in on my friend's english class and what do I find - Tanksley. He's so boring that I decided to rate him on that one day!!! He kept talking about how the atomic bomb used to scare him when he was little and how he was so gangsta, it didn't faze him. He wouldn't let his G status come back down to earth.

You have a quiz at the end of each book, which is about 6ish. No Midterm. Final= 50%. I got 90's on all of myquizes and my final was pretty good and only got a B. I'm almost positive he grades arbitrarialy to get an even distribution of grades. No control over your grades cuz the final is worth SO much and so open ended. You don't know what heWants

Now THIS man is the prime example of what a professor should be. Extremely helpful, great personality, and picks out some of the most insightful and interesting books to read and movies to watch. Ppl that complains he's boring obviously dont hold discussions in class like your suppose to..if your not going to talk..just sit down and listen

Very intelligent and knows his stuff. He may spend a lot of time talking, but at least you don't have to. Weekly Quizzes on the books. 1 Final Paper, put your all into that paper cause it counts for about 1/3 of your grade. 1 Oral Presentation, which went very well. Not always clear on what he wants on assignements, but is helpful if you ask.
