Chuck might be the nicest teacher at Pitt. Both times I've had him the amount of reading has been intense, but he grades easy and, for all of his frequently stated opinions, is very open minded towards alternative interpretations no matter how much they clash with his own. Thoughtful, clear, really respects his students, all around great professor.

Comment:
Dr. Hier presents a refreshing revisionist perspective of Soviet history. Rather than taking a partisan look at sensitive topics, he gives a balanced look at both views of the Soviet period. There are frequent but short papers, none of which are graded too hard. Effective teacher and interesting class!

Chuck is a good, funny guy. He vaguely reminds me of Phil Donahue... His Soviet History class was extremely informative. His lectures are pretty scatterbrained, so go to recitations (big part of grade anyway). Also, the grades all papers, no tests - 6 two page papers, one 5 pager, and a final that is a handwritten essay. Highly recommended.

Chuck is a great professor, and ridiculously nice outside of class. He always responds to questions, and appreciates student interest in the material. His perspective is actually different, which makes things more interesting to listen to during lectures.

Nice guy and knows his subject very well. However, a self-proclaimed socialist and has a hard time not ranting about how evil capitalism is at times. 2 Midterm papers (5 pages), 6 small papers (2 pages), and a final. Not a hard class.

very laid back, easy going, likeable professor. very knowledgeable. teaches some unorthodox approaches to viewing soviet history but well worth taking the course. most assignemets were take home essays with only the final essay written in class.

On the first day of class he told us that this subject was not his strong suit... enough said. He is basically a student teaching students. However, he is very dedicated and wants to help as much as he can. A genuinely good guy.

This guy was ridiculous. Had the speaking skills of a middle school cheerleader. Graded unfairly. He is very nice though, and very approachable. I just don't think he should be lecturing. He is a STUDENT of history and it shows.

Eh...not so great. He wasnt BAD, but not good either. Honestly, he seemed kinda dumb to me. He didnt really seem to explain everything that he should've. Also, would mix up stories and get your historical time-frame out of whack. Grading is okay, the final was graded unfairly. Doesnt like giving A's

very interesting and knowledgable guy. was actually in siberia during the fall of the soviet union. the earlier history doesnt seem to be his thing, though, as all of the lectures prior to the ones on marxism were unintentionally hysterical.

chuck is the bomb. very knowlegable on almost every topic. Friendly, and his lectures are interesting to boot. If you pay attention to what he has to say and take some notes, the quizzes are a breeze, and he tells you what is going to be on the midterms beforehand. Very interesting class.

Had him when he was a TA... horrible recitation, very unclear, not an engaging speaker at all. Not very helpful.... Might be better at lecture, but small section is rough
